According to Xinhua News Agency, the World Robotics 2025 report, recently released by the Frankfurt-based International Federation of Robotics (IFR), said China's industrial robot supply will reach a record 2,027,000 robots in 2024, accounting for more than half of global demand.
The annual number of assembly robots in China is expected to rise to 295,000 by 2023, up 7% from 2023, marking the highest level on record, the report said.
Globally, 542,000 industrial robots were assembled in 2024, more than double the number a decade ago, and the number of assembly robots worldwide exceeded 500,000 for the fourth consecutive year.
China's strategy to modernize its manufacturing base has reached a new milestone in its push for automation, IFR President Takayuki Ito said.
China's robot supply is expected to double in three years, to over 1 million robots in 2021 and up to 2 million robots in 2024.
Asia remains the dominant market, accounting for 74% of new robot deployments in 2024, compared with 16% in Europe and 9% in the Americas.
In China, the electrical and electronics industry will continue to lead demand with 83,000 robots installed by 2024, followed by the automotive industry with 57,200 robots. Chinese suppliers are also increasing their robot presence in the food processing, textile and wood products industries.
For the first time, Chinese robot makers sold more robots than foreign competitors in the domestic market, with their domestic market share rising to 57% in 2024 from 47% in 2023, the report said.
IFR's Q1 2025 survey also showed strong double-digit growth in robot orders across Asia, largely driven by China.
Worldwide, the total number of industrial robots in operation will reach 4,664,000 by 2024, up 9% from the previous year. President Takayuki Ito said that while the global macroeconomic situation may create short-term “headwinds,” the long-term growth trend in the industry remains strong.
The report forecasts that the global robotics industry will maintain strong growth. Worldwide robot installations are expected to increase by 6% to 575,000 by 2025 and exceed 700,000 by 2028, with an average annual growth rate of around 10% until then. China is expected to remain the world's largest market after this period./.
