In many rural areas of Hung Yen, the Mid-Autumn Festival has become a unique and brilliant community festival with giant lantern models. This is not only a game in the full moon festival but also a symbol of love and sharing from adults to the young generation, contributing to a warm, meaningful and complete Mid-Autumn Festival.
The attraction of giant lantern models
Although there is still nearly a week left until the "Full Moon Festival", since the beginning of the 8th lunar month, the Mid-Autumn Festival atmosphere in Thai Hoa 1 village (Nam Dong Hung commune) has been filled every evening with colorful lantern models and the sound of drums going through the village. Wherever the lantern model caravan goes, people from old to young and children follow, creating a joyful and bustling scene. This is also the village that initiated the most impressive giant lantern model movement in the locality, which has been maintained for decades, in 2023, the 3.5m high cat lantern model won first prize in the OLM National Mid-Autumn Festival Lantern Creation Contest.
Mr. Nham Huu Khu, Head of Thai Hoa 1 village, shared that, with the wish that children have a warm and meaningful Mid-Autumn Festival, for decades, people in the village have mobilized social resources, people contributed labor and money to make unique and eye-catching lantern models. The models are designed based on funny animals, close to childhood such as cats, rabbits, dragons, snakes, birds, tigers, etc.
From common materials such as iron frames, flashing lights, canvas, and fabric, with creativity, meticulousness, and unity, people have transformed simple materials into giant, splendid mascots. This year, Thai Hoa 1 village completed 13 giant models, put them on trailers, and displayed them in a concentrated manner and performed every evening, attracting a large number of people and children in the commune as well as the surrounding area.

Vu Duy Phuong, class 7A, Quang Duong Secondary School (Nam Dong Hung commune) shared that the Mid-Autumn Festival is always the most memorable festival for him when he gets to participate in Mid-Autumn Festival programs such as watching lion dances, carrying Mid-Autumn lanterns and breaking the moon cake. These activities have helped him have more childhood joy as well as understand more about the traditional beauty of the nation.
The movement of making giant lanterns quickly spread to many villages in the commune. According to Mr. Pham Cong Luan, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Nam Dong Hung commune, in the past, the movement of making large, unique lanterns was only in the villages of the old Dong Hoang commune. This year's Mid-Autumn Festival, the newly merged commune of Nam Dong Hung (formerly Dong Hoang commune and Xuan Quang Dong commune) has expanded to many villages with a total of over 100 large and small lanterns, variously simulating the 12 zodiac animals, fairy tale characters, fables... All models are mounted on homemade vehicles, equipped with lighting systems, cheerful music, hanging the national flag and pictures of Uncle Ho, bringing a vivid effect, attracting all eyes.
With the theme “Lanterns light up dreams”, the highlight of this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival in Nam Dong Hung commune is the display of lantern models in the central area of the commune, along the main road; the procession of Uncle Ho’s palanquin and lantern models; camping, performing arts, lion dances; and moon-watching parties in residential areas. In addition, the commune also organized gift giving for children in especially difficult circumstances and provided financial support for villages to give Mid-Autumn gifts to 5,200 children aged 1 to 14 in the commune.
Join hands for a meaningful full moon season
With a core role, since the beginning of the 7th lunar month, the Kha Tan village Youth Union (Dien Ha commune) has gathered forces to prepare for the Mid-Autumn Festival, from making giant mascot models to organizing performances and art performances for children.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dung, Secretary of the Kha Tan Village Youth Union, said that if last year the village made the mascots for the Mid-Autumn Festival as a buffalo and a dragon, this year the village added a snake - the symbol of the lunar year 2025 and a fish - associated with the meaning of "carp watching the moon", "carp transforming into a dragon" symbolizing the will to rise up, success and luck. The process of making the model requires meticulousness and meticulousness from the design, framing, and scaling stages, especially with large models with many details, requiring careful calculation and a high sense of responsibility. In order to complete the model in time before the 1st of the 8th lunar month, the Youth Union mobilized about 20 union members, youth and people to participate in the implementation.

Mr. Nguyen Van Bang, a member of Kha Tan village's Youth Union, shared that with the pioneering spirit of the youth, the members and villagers in the village took advantage of their free time in the afternoon or evening to gather at the village's Cultural House to create mascot models bearing the village's unique mark, thereby bringing joy to children during the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Mr. Nguyen Van Toan, Secretary of the Youth Union of Dien Ha commune, said that by the beginning of the 8th lunar month, all the mid-autumn lantern models of the villages in the commune had been completed and performed in the evenings with a length of about 3-4 km, creating a joyful and exciting atmosphere for the people and children. To prepare for the first large-scale Mid-Autumn Festival after the merger of commune-level administrative units, the Youth Union of the commune directed 35 village and hamlet youth unions to prepare communal-scale collective singing and dancing performances that will take place on the morning of the 15th of the 8th lunar month. In addition, the commune has also prepared 1,000 small hand-held lanterns to distribute to children in the area, ensuring a joyful and safe atmosphere for children during the full moon season.
The atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival has filled everywhere in Hung Yen from urban to rural areas. It is not only a festival associated with children's childhood but also a Reunion Festival - a symbol of solidarity and the care of the community and authorities for children. This activity has contributed to preserving and enriching the beauty of traditional culture, while bringing a full moon season, meaning and full of joy to the future "green buds".
