According to the latest report just published by Ookla on September 17, fixed internet speed in Vietnam reached 261.80 Mbps in August, up 3 places compared to July to rank 10th - entering the group of 10 countries and territories with the fastest internet speed in the world for the first time. This is also the highest ranking of domestic internet recorded since the Ookla Speedtest Global Index ranking (launched in 2017).
Along with the rapid development of fixed broadband networks, Vietnam's mobile internet also increased by 2 ranks compared to last month, from 18th to 16th place, reaching an average speed of 152.17 Mbps. In terms of both types of connection (mobile and fixed), Vietnam is present in the group of 20 markets with strong internet development. 10 years ago, the average speed reached 3.8 Mbps (according to Akamai Technologies in the fourth quarter of 2015), ranking 95th out of 100 markets measured.
The need to consume content such as videos , livestreams... contributes to promoting network operators to invest in upgrading services to serve users.

Since the internet first entered the domestic market (late 1997) until now, after nearly 30 years, Vietnam has gone from being a latecomer to catching up with advanced countries, gradually mastering its own products, technology and network equipment, even joining the group of countries mastering internet fiber optic cables. Along with that, many policies that are beneficial to the development of the country's internet have also been passed, promoting the "acceleration" process.
A representative of a network operator in Vietnam said that the driving force for domestic telecommunications enterprises to continuously upgrade service quality comes from the increasing actual needs of users, the trend of data consumption constantly requires large bandwidth. Currently, domestic internet service providers (ISPs) have all increased the minimum subscription package speed to 300 Mbps, 6 times higher than a few years ago (the lowest package used to reach 50 Mbps). Not only increasing bandwidth, telecommunications enterprises also invest heavily in infrastructure, fiber optic networks, and apply many new technologies similar to the deployment speed of developed countries.
Currently, Vietnam owns 6 submarine cable lines including AAG, IA, AAE-1, APG, ADC and SJC2 with a total design capacity of 80 Tbps, of which ADC and SJC2 are the lines that have just been put into operation. Besides the submarine cable system, Vietnam also has land-based optical cable lines, notably the VSTN line owned by Vietnam with a design capacity of 4 Tbps.
