The shooting at Republican candidate Donald Trump's campaign rally could boost his bid against Democratic President Joe Biden, but it also adds to the chaos in more ways than one.
The campaign was already strained as Mr Biden faced calls to resign after a poor debate performance with Mr Trump in June.

Here are some possible scenarios.
Concerns about political violence deepen
The race for the White House is already fierce in a polarized America. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll in May, 2 in 3 Americans said they were concerned about post-election violence. On July 13, the US Department of Homeland Security said it was coordinating with operations to ensure adequate security. Security has been tightened at Trump Tower.
The Republican Party is more noticeable with the strong image of Mr. Trump
The party convention will take place on July 15 in Milwaukee, where Mr. Trump will be formally nominated and will announce his vice presidential pick. Many voters are likely to watch Mr. Trump’s convention speech. Republicans at the convention are expected to give Mr. Trump a more enthusiastic endorsement.
Political attacks against Mr. Trump may be on hold
After the assassination attempt, Democrats, including President Biden, were quick to condemn the violence. A Biden campaign official said the group pulled its TV ads attacking Trump as quickly as possible to reflect the gravity of the incident. It is likely that Democrats do not want to be seen as targeting Trump at this sensitive time.
Trump's support could be consolidated
In the immediate aftermath of the attack, Mr. Trump garnered celebrity endorsements from Tesla founder Elon Musk and billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman. The assassination is likely to bolster Mr. Trump’s narrative of being a victim, motivating some undecided voters to back him.
"I fully support President Trump and hope he recovers quickly," Musk wrote on X, the company he owns, 30 minutes after Mr. Trump was shot.
