Haneda Airport Crash: Black Box of Plane Found

Japanese authorities have recovered the black box of a Japan Coast Guard plane that collided with a Japan Airlines (JAL) commercial plane at Tokyo's Haneda airport on January 2.

Speaking to reporters on January 3, Mr. Fujiwara Takuya, an investigator of the Japan Transport Safety Board, said that the staff had examined the fuselage of both planes and the debris collected at the scene. The work to retrieve data from the black box is underway. Meanwhile, the black box of the JAL plane has not been found.

Investigators found traces of impact on the fuselage of both planes, Mr. Fujiwara added. Investigators will continue to study the wreckage at the scene until late afternoon on January 3.

According to Japanese police, the collision between the two planes occurred on the afternoon of January 2. All 379 passengers and crew on the JAL Airbus A350 were safely evacuated, and no one was in danger of losing their lives after the plane caught fire.

However, five of the six crew members on board the Japan Coast Guard plane were killed. The captain ejected from the plane and was seriously injured.
