Oil tanker fire: Fire and explosion destroys deck and side of ship

(Dan Tri) - At the time the oil tanker in Ninh Binh caught fire, there was no cargo in the hold. The explosion caused the fire, destroying the deck and side of the ship, scattering it around.

On the afternoon of January 3, the People's Committee of Xich Tho commune sent a report to the People's Committee of Nho Quan district (Ninh Binh) about the explosion of an oil tanker of Ha Long Float Glass Company Limited - CFG, at the company's port (located in Lien Minh village, Xich Tho commune).

According to the report, on the same morning, technical workers of Ha Long Industrial Company Limited - CFG inspected and maintained a cargo ship (number NB-8369, capacity of about 500 tons, under repair).

The report stated that when the rotary hatch valve handle was discovered to be broken, the workers repaired it by welding and maintaining the valve handle. At the time of the repair, the ship was not carrying any cargo and there was no oil in the hold.

While welding and maintaining the hand valve, an explosion suddenly occurred, causing the deck and side of the ship to be destroyed and scattered around, while the bottom and cabin of the ship sank.

The explosion injured Mr. D.TA and NVH, causing minor burns. The victims were quickly taken to the Ninh Binh General Hospital for emergency treatment.

After the explosion, the leaders of Xich Tho Commune People's Committee were present at the scene, directing the functional forces to coordinate with the company to conduct first aid for the victims, put out the fire, and ensure traffic safety in the Sua bridge area, Lien Minh village.

More than 100 liters of engine oil (inside the ship) spilled onto the Boi River, covering an area of ​​about 200 square meters. After the incident, Ha Long Industrial Company Limited - CFG and relevant agencies arranged oil spill prevention equipment, sucked the spilled oil onto the river surface into a tanker truck for disposal.

The cause of the explosion is being verified and clarified by Ninh Binh province authorities.
