Overcoming sadness

Việt NamViệt Nam06/07/2024

The exam scores and admission scores for grade 10 public high schools in many localities have been announced. The 2024 high school graduation exam is in the grading stage. Admissions to grades 1 and 6 at high-quality schools and private schools that require entrance exams and selection have mostly been announced. The learning path ahead for everyone is still very long because learning is lifelong. But right now, when receiving the news that your child did not pass the entrance exam to the school of your dreams, the sadness is still full, the mood hits rock bottom and the tears cannot be stopped from falling.

On social networking forums, many people were happy with the joy of their children having passed a memorable milestone, conquering a difficult goal. Congratulations, flowers were thrown, and pictures were "showered all over the sky" for the candidates who had tried their best to achieve good results. They deserved to receive that joy.

In another quiet corner, students who were a few points short, even just 0.25 points short of the standard score to get into their dream school, now accept their second choice or find other doors to continue. The joys are varied, but the sorrows are all the same.

A friend whose child is in grade 9 called me with a choked voice asking, my child failed all of his 10th grade wishes to enter a public school, what should he do now? The shock was because his test score was not low, 36.5 points, but unexpectedly this year's benchmark scores for both the first and second wishes were much higher than previous years, so the family had no time to prepare. Even when they knew the test score, the whole family was happy because they thought this score would pass their first wish. When the benchmark score was announced, they were stunned, 36.75 points to pass. They did not dare to scold their child because their parents were sad 1, maybe their child was sad 10, they could only encourage their child to be sad, to cry if they wanted to, but not to fall down or be discouraged. When this door closes, another door will open. Their parents are asking around, looking for a good private school, suitable for their child to continue the long journey ahead.

Another parent texted me, sharing her regret for not having the confidence to apply for her child to a high-quality secondary school near her home, but instead choosing another high-quality school, with a reputation and achievements even better than the other school, but far from home. I honestly told this mother that my child was not qualified to apply to any of those two schools, let alone be considered for admission. The child being accepted to the other school was already very good.

A parent who is a high school teacher said that she did not know where to hide her face because her child failed the entrance exam to the school where she was teaching, the reason was because the Literature score - also the subject her mother taught - was too low, so even though she got a 9.5 in Math, she could not handle the Literature subject. She blamed herself for not being close to her child, compromising with her child so that her child could study unevenly. Although she was sad, she analyzed with her child, letting her child see that this was a profound lesson, that she could not only study the subject she liked but also had to try hard in the parts she did not like, was not good at. Developing the good aspects and trying to improve the bad aspects, that is the long-term goal to pursue, not just raising the score of a certain subject because of studying the right subject, guessing the right questions.

There are many admission season confessions that we hear and know every year. There is no room for the words “if only” or “if”, because everything has been determined by clear scores, by the admission certificate, while others do not need a paper saying “failed”, but everyone understands.

An exam is not enough to tell the success or failure of a lifetime. Stumbling is also a lesson that everyone must go through in their journey to adulthood. The important thing is whether they know how to stand up after failure or slide down into sadness. Never let any failure hold you back because no matter how painful or desperate it is, it is still yesterday, today, and tomorrow will be a new day, bright with sunshine. Open your heart and look forward with all your confidence and positive emotions to learn, innovate and adapt to the colorful life.
