Shooter Pham Quang Huy won the first gold medal for the Vietnamese team.

Yesterday (September 28), competing in the men's 10m air pistol shooting event, shooter Pham Quang Huy excellently brought home the first Gold Medal (HCV), helping to "quench the thirst for gold" of the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at ASIAD 19 and the expectations of the home fans. He and two other shooters also won a Bronze Medal (HCĐ) in the team event.

Yesterday, the Vietnamese sports delegation won the first gold medal in shooting thanks to shooter Pham Quang Huy. Competing in the final of the men's 10m air pistol event, Quang Huy won with 240.5 points, 1.1 points more than Korean shooter Lee Wonho (239.4 points). Also in this event, three shooters: Lai Cong Minh, Pham Quang Huy and Phan Cong Minh also won the team bronze medal with 1,730 points, only 4 points behind the gold medal of the Indian team and 3 points behind the silver medal of the Chinese team.

The men's 10m air pistol is the event in which shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh won the 2016 Olympic championship. In preparation for the 19th ASIAD, Pham Quang Huy was directly trained by shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh and Korean expert Park Chung Gun.

Practice makes perfect on the shooting range

Pham Quang Huy was born in 1996, the eldest son of the famous Vietnamese shooting couple Pham Cao Son and Dang Thi Hang. Shooter Pham Cao Son won 11 gold medals at the SEA Games with standard pistols and air pistols in 19 years of competing for the national team before retiring and moving to coaching the Vietnamese shooting team, later in the shooting department of Hai Phong .

Mr. Pham Cao Son initially did not intend for his son to pursue a career in shooting because he thought that competing in sports was very hard. Only during the summer vacations did Mr. Son introduce Huy to shooting, and then, when he saw his son's true passion, he changed his mind and officially became his son's first coach.

At the age of 18, Quang Huy became a shooter for Hai Phong and made his mark with two bronze medals at the National Cup and the National Youth Championship. In 2017, at the age of 21, Quang Huy achieved the National Master title and became one of the leading shooters of Hai Phong shooting. Quang Huy's results are also the result of Mr. Pham Cao Son in his role as Head of the Shooting Department of the Hai Phong Department of Culture and Sports, while his wife, Ms. Dang Thi Hang, is the coach.

Quang Huy is the most outstanding successor of the next generation of shooters in the port city shooting and Vietnamese shooting in general. In recent years, he has continuously participated in regional, Asian and world competitions, thanks to which his achievements have improved remarkably. In 2022, Huy ranked 64th in the 2022 World Championship and recently moved up to 40th. In 2022, at the 31st SEA Games, Quang Huy contributed to the gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol team - an important stepping stone towards the precious gold medal of Vietnamese sports at the 19th ASIAD.

Vietnam has one more silver medal in gymnastics and one bronze medal in swimming.

Competing in the gymnastics event, athlete Nguyen Van Khanh Phong won a silver medal in the rings event with a score of 14.600. This is the second silver medal of Vietnamese gymnastics at the ASIAD since Phan Thi Ha Thanh won a silver medal at the 2014 Asian Games. Also in this event, two athletes Dang Ngoc Xuan Thien and Trinh Hai Khang could not win a medal.

Competing late last night, Vietnam's top swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang entered the final of the men's 800m freestyle event. With a time of 7 minutes 51.44 seconds, Huy Hoang finished third, winning another bronze medal for Vietnamese sports, which is also the first medal of the Vietnamese swimming team at the 19th ASIAD and his second Asian Games bronze medal after the bronze medal won at the 18th ASIAD. This achievement helped the Vietnamese "swimmer" exceed the Olympic A standard in the men's 800m freestyle event and officially win a ticket to the 2024 Olympics in Paris (France).

Also yesterday, in the eSports competition, the Vietnamese team lost 0-2 to Taiwan (China) in the semi-finals of the League of Legends event and will meet China in the bronze medal match. In the fencing event, three players Nguyen Van Quyet, Vu Thanh An and Nguyen Xuan Loi lost to Uzbekistan athletes with a score of 40-45 in the round of 16 of the team saber event.

Entering the mixed team chess competition, the Vietnamese team convincingly won 2-0 against the Singapore team. This is also one of the events that Vietnamese sports are expected to win medals. This event has eight participating teams, of which Southeast Asia has representatives from Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia; the remaining four teams are China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao.

In the final match of Group D of the 19th ASIAD women's football yesterday afternoon, the Vietnamese women's team suffered a heavy 0-7 defeat to the top Asian team, ranked 8th in the world, Japan. Vietnam's competitor for the second place in the group with the best record officially got a ticket to play in the quarterfinals after defeating the team from the same region, Myanmar, with a score of 3-0. Thus, after yesterday's series of matches, the eight teams in the women's football tournament were determined to enter the quarterfinals, including the top teams of the five groups: Japan, South Korea, Taiwan (China), North Korea, China, and the three second-placed teams with the best records: Philippines, Thailand, Uzbekistan. The Vietnamese women's team ranked last in the second-placed team group and was eliminated.

After the Thai Olympic team was eliminated in the previous match of the men's football round of 16 of the 19th Asian Games on September 27 with a 0-1 loss to Chinese Taipei, yesterday (September 28), two other representatives of Southeast Asia also had to stop after Indonesia lost to Uzbekistan 0-2 and Myanmar lost to Japan 0-7. The remaining match of the round of 16 also determined that the Saudi Arabia team entered the quarterfinals with a 2-0 victory over India. Thus, the men's football quarterfinals taking place on the evening of October 1 include matches between the Olympic teams: Uzbekistan-Saudi Arabia, Iran-Hong Kong (China), Japan-North Korea and China-South Korea.
