More than a year has passed since the accident, Dinh Ngoc Anh Kien's life is associated with surgeries and the endless worries of a poor single mother.
The tragedy happened in July 2024, when Kien was in a traffic accident on his way to his grandparents' house. He was taken to the Ea H'leo District Medical Center (old) for emergency treatment, then transferred to the Central Highlands General Hospital for surgery, and then transferred to Children's Hospital 2 (Ho Chi Minh City) for intensive treatment. Kien was diagnosed with intraventricular hemorrhage, cerebral edema, decompression skull surgery, pneumonia, sepsis... leading to brain infection.
The situation of the boy Dinh Ngoc Anh Kien is in dire need of help. |
Kien has undergone many surgeries, emergency care, drug infusions, and intensive care. The total cost of Kien's treatment is more than 400 million VND, even though he has health insurance support. Although exhausted, Ms. Nong Thi Van (born in 1984, Nung ethnic group) still tries to manage and borrow money everywhere for her son's treatment. However, in August 2025, the last of the poor mother's meager money has run out, Ms. Van asked for Kien to return to Dak Lak .
Ms. Van choked up: “The doctor said that if he perseveres in treatment and rehabilitation, he will be able to sit up in about 3-4 years. But it will be a long time before he can walk normally or go to school with his teachers and friends. Seeing him motionless on the bed, I feel so heartbroken. He used to be a good student, well-behaved, and everyone loved him. But now, his life is at risk of being tied to a hospital bed.”
Currently, Kien cannot sit up by himself, cannot speak or laugh, his eyes occasionally blink slowly, his body is thin, and he depends on his mother for all his daily activities. Kien's life now depends on spoonfuls of milk and spoonfuls of thin porridge through a gastric tube. Each month, the cost of medicine and medical supplies alone is more than 3.5 million VND. This amount of money is too much for a poor household like Ms. Van. Since her child's accident, she has had to quit all her jobs and stay by her child's side day and night.

Before the accident, Kien lived with his grandparents because his father left home in 2020. Van worked as a factory worker in Binh Duong for a while before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, so she returned to her hometown and the mother and son stayed at her grandparents' house. After the accident and treatment in the hospital, Kien's grandmother and an uncle passed away, leaving behind pain and a large void in the family.
Neighbors often came to visit, some gave a little rice, some gave a box of milk, and encouraged him. Teachers and friends from Kien's school also sent money back with the hope of helping his friend have more opportunities, but it was nothing compared to the huge medical expenses.
We hope that kind-hearted organizations and individuals will support Kien to have the opportunity to receive timely treatment, continue his unfinished studies and have a brighter future.
