YouTube – the leading video platform owned by Google – is taking another step in its ambition to become a new e-commerce destination, with a series of updates that turn short video content Shorts into a direct sales tool.

One of the most notable improvements is the ability to automatically tag products using artificial intelligence (AI). This feature allows the system to analyze video content, from images, voice to creator descriptions, to identify and display relevant products. These products will be embedded directly in the video or below the content, making it easy for viewers to click to learn more and shop.
YouTube confirmed that it will roll out smart shopping features to its US content creator community next year, kicking off a global strategy in the field of video combined with commerce.
One key aspect of this strategy is giving creators more control, especially with longer videos. Instead of being limited to a single ad, creators can update the ad in the future.
Meanwhile, in the short-form video space – which is facing fierce competition from TikTok and similar platforms – YouTube is looking to bridge the gap between content and purchase behavior. Integrating direct links to brand sales pages is a move aimed squarely at the immediate consumer behavior that is common in videos with “review” or “product recommendation” elements.
YouTube is also rolling out another experimental feature that will allow top viewers to buy exclusive merchandise from their favorite creators. YouTube has been testing this new feature since the beginning of the year but has not announced a specific launch date.
Although still in beta, these features show that YouTube is repositioning itself not only as a content distribution site, but also as a bridge between users, creators and brands in a closed value chain.
