Lao Cai Department of Health has just informed about the test results of the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control, related to the case of 80 students of Lao Cai College, Campus 1, being hospitalized after eating at the canteen.

Previously, on the afternoon of October 9, a number of students in the dormitory of Lao Cai College, campus 1 (Lao Cai City) were hospitalized with symptoms of digestive disorders, suspected of food poisoning after eating at the school's canteen.

Immediately after receiving the information, Lao Cai Department of Health directed relevant units to investigate, verify, take water, food and patient samples for necessary tests.

According to the canteen records, this meal had 8 dishes: fried pork, braised pork, stir-fried chicken with onions, grilled pork rolls with lolot leaves, fried chicken, stir-fried bean sprouts with cabbage, pickled cucumbers, water spinach soup, and also sausage-filled buns purchased from an outside establishment.

Drinking water is taken directly from the cafeteria's RO water purifier and the dormitory's RO water purifier.

Samples were sent to the National Institute for Food Safety and Hygiene Control. The test results showed that four dishes tested positive for Salmonella bacteria: pickled cucumbers, grilled pork with lolot leaves, fried chicken, and spinach soup.

The Department of Health determined this was a case of food poisoning, caused by Salmonella bacteria infection.

According to the World Health Organization, Salmonella bacteria is one of the four main causes of diarrhea worldwide.

Most cases of Salmonella infection are mild. But occasionally the disease can be life-threatening. The severity of the disease depends on host factors and the Salmonella serotype.

Salmonella is one of the microorganisms for which antibiotic-resistant serotypes have emerged, moving back into the food chain.

Practicing basic food hygiene rules, such as “adequate cooking” of food, is a recommended preventive measure against Salmonella infection.
