8 highway projects have speed increased to 90 km/h

The Ministry of Transport has agreed to raise the maximum speed from 80 to 90 km/h for eight four-lane highway projects, including Mai Son - National Highway 45 and Nha Trang - Cam Lam.

On February 2, a representative of the Ministry of Transport said that it had approved speed adjustments for cars, passenger vans with up to 30 seats, and trucks with up to 3.5 tons on highways with 4 motor vehicle lanes and a median strip (2 lanes each way).

The 8 expressway sections with increased speed include: Mai Son - National Highway 45, National Highway 45 - Nghi Son, Nghi Son - Dien Chau, Dien Chau - Bai Vot, Nha Trang - Cam Lam, Cam Lam - Vinh Hao, Vinh Hao - Phan Thiet, Lao Cai - Kim Thanh border gate. Of which, 7 sections belong to the North-South expressway project phase one (2017-2021).

The Department of Construction Investment Management (Ministry of Transport) was assigned to direct project management boards and investors to review the exploited expressway sections, check technical factors to ensure meeting the speed limit of 90 km/h, and adjust the operating speed in the traffic organization plan.

With the 15 km long Cao Bo - Mai Son expressway, because the route has 4 bridges without a continuous hard median strip, not ensuring the length of the acceleration section, the Ministry has not yet allowed the increase in operating speed.

Currently, the country has more than 1,890 km of highways in operation. The Ministry of Transport recently allowed the maximum speed to be increased to 90 km/h at 4-lane highway projects such as Tuyen Quang - Phu Tho, Trung Luong - My Thuan, My Thuan - Can Tho . The work of ensuring traffic order and safety has been stable so far.

Then the Vietnam Road Administration proposed the Ministry of Transport to increase the speed to 90 km/h for the invested divergent expressway sections designed with 4 lanes for motor vehicles, with a hard median strip separating the 2 directions of traffic.

The North-South Expressway project, phase one, is 654 km long, divided into 11 independently operated component projects, and is expected to be operational in 2024. The investment projects in phase one have 4 limited lanes, no emergency lanes but emergency stops, a 17 m roadbed, and a design speed of 80 km/h. In phase two, the new projects will expand to 6 lanes, with a design speed of 120 km/h.
