According to Reuters, citing a source familiar with the matter on September 4, Ms. Harris agreed to the rule of muting the microphone before it was her turn to speak. This will be the first debate between Mr. Trump and Ms. Harris since the current vice president replaced US President Joe Biden on the election race in July.

The decision ends a long-running dispute between Trump and Harris over how to conduct the September 10 debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Harris's campaign had pushed for live microphones because they would allow for a substantive exchange between the candidates, while Trump's campaign wanted the microphones turned off.

According to a source familiar with the matter, Vice President Harris’s campaign still hopes that there will be moments when ABC News, the host of the debate on September 10, will be forced to turn on the microphones so that candidates can answer their opponents. However, ABC News clarified on September 5 that the candidates’ microphones will only be turned on when it is their turn to speak and will be muted when another candidate speaks.

Ms. Harris called Mr. Trump's cemetery visit a ' political stunt'

ABC News added that other rules agreed upon by both sides include no opening statements, two minutes for each candidate to make a closing statement, no props or pre-written notes allowed on stage, no pre-shared topics or questions, and no questions from candidates. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer each question, three minutes for rebuttals, and an additional one minute to follow up, clarify, or respond to their opponent.

Former President Trump won the coin toss on September 3 to determine the podium position and the order of closing remarks. Accordingly, Mr. Trump chose the speaking order and gave the final closing remarks. Ms. Harris chose the podium position on the right screen, meaning Mr. Trump was on the left side of the stage.

Following the presidential debate, Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Walz and Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance will debate on CBS News on October 1.
