New backpacks, new notebooks and smiles of students in flood-hit Tran Yen area

On September 19, continuing the journey to support students in flood-affected areas, Tuoi Tre newspaper coordinated with Yen Bai Provincial Youth Union to present 872 gifts to students of Dao Thinh Primary and Secondary School, Y Can Primary and Secondary School and Co Phuc Town Primary School (Tran Yen district, Yen Bai).

Many children have to stay at other homes.

Tran Yen was one of the areas that was deeply flooded last week. Floodwaters poured in from upstream and the Red River rose 2-3 meters, causing hundreds of households in low-lying areas and riverside areas to be submerged.

Of the 373 students of Dao Thinh Primary and Secondary School, nearly 200 were severely affected by the flood.

At Y Can Primary and Secondary School, more than 300 students were affected, including more than 20 students from poor families, orphans, who were living with their grandparents but their houses were flooded and eroded, and they still have to stay elsewhere.

At Co Phuc Town Primary School, there are also 368 students whose families suffered losses.

For days, the children witnessed the scene of water flooding their houses, some up to the roof. Some families had all their belongings swept away, not even pots or pans left to cook with after the flood.

Although the schools were not deeply flooded, they were used as temporary shelters for residents and students during the flood days. Teachers were only able to welcome students back on September 16.

If Tran Yen these days is submerged in a brown color of mud left behind after the water receded, in the schools, the laughter, the sound of playing, the colors of new clothes of students bring joy to the people here. It signals that peaceful days are returning.

On the afternoon of September 19, despite the scorching sun, children eagerly gathered in the schoolyard to receive gifts.

Each child received a new backpack with notebooks, pens, school supplies, a jacket, a warm blanket and cash, the value of the gift is 1 million VND/student.

With their new backpacks on their shoulders, the children walked and jumped around the school yard. Their simple joy eased the worried wrinkles on the faces of their teachers and parents present in the school yard.
