According to the staff of the Tissue Bank of Hanoi Eye Hospital 2, early in the morning of September 25, the staff of the Tissue Bank received a call from a doctor informing them that he wanted to donate the cornea of his mother who had just passed away, to bring light to a blind patient.
Holding back the pain of losing his mother, the military doctor fulfilled his noble wish, donating his mother's corneas to bring light to two other people.
Immediately, the Tissue Bank team started up and quickly moved to the site to collect corneas.
Everything was done quickly, the patient's corneas were collected by technicians from the Tissue Bank, Hanoi Eye Hospital 2.
During the entire process, her son stood quietly observing from a corner of the room. Only when the technicians finished removing the cornea did he come closer, gently stroked his mother’s hair, then hugged her and burst into tears.
The doctor burst into tears at the moment of sending his mother off, and the act of donating his corneas was carried out according to her wishes.
"The cornea donor was a 75-year-old woman in Hanoi who passed away at 5:18 a.m. on September 25. The person who called the Tissue Bank, expressing his desire to donate his mother's cornea, was military doctor, PhD, Dr. Nguyen Le Trung, Deputy Head of the Ophthalmology Department of Military Hospital 103 (Ha Dong District, Hanoi)," a member of the Tissue Bank, Hanoi Hospital 2, shared.
Cornea donation brings light and hope to those who have unfortunately lost their sight.
"As Tissue Bank specialists, although we have witnessed this many times, we still cannot help but be stunned by the above scene. In such cases, what is given away is never just a pair of corneas, but also the infinite love that was sent before giving them away," a member participating in receiving the donated corneas emotionally expressed.
According to Hanoi Eye Hospital 2, the old woman's family shared that before she passed away, she expressed her wish to donate her corneas to help blind patients. Her son is a military doctor, PhD, Dr. Nguyen Le Trung, Deputy Head of the Ophthalmology Department of Military Hospital 103. Holding back the pain of losing his mother, the doctor carried out this noble wish.
According to the Ministry of Health , there are thousands of patients nationwide waiting for the opportunity to see the light again, including many children. Donating corneas brings light and hope to those who have unfortunately lost their sight. Many people have to wait 5-6 years for a transplant because there is no source of donated corneas.
Corneas are only collected after the donor has passed away. To date, there have been nearly 1,000 cornea donors nationwide. The youngest donor was 4 years old and the oldest was 107 years old.
