Baby girl born from embryo frozen for more than a decade

A healthy baby girl weighing 3.3kg was born at the Central Maternity Hospital from a frozen embryo that had been stored for 11 years.

On August 27, Professor Nguyen Duy Anh, Director of the Hospital, said this was a special birth, demonstrating the ability of modern medicine to preserve long-term embryo samples.

The 37-year-old mother underwent IVF in 2014 at the National Fertility Support Center and gave birth to her first son. The remaining embryos were stored with the intention of having more children later. "The doctor said that the embryo samples would be safely preserved for 5 years, 10 years or longer. I did not expect that more than a decade later I would actually return," she shared.

When she returned earlier this year, the woman was concerned about the quality of the embryo samples after such a long time. In particular, she carried the congenital hemolytic gene and had experienced complications with oligohydramnios in her previous pregnancy. However, doctors confirmed that her health and quality indicators were guaranteed. On the first transfer, she conceived successfully.

"We only used one embryo, transferred it successfully and the result was as expected," Mr. Anh said, adding that he closely monitored this special pregnancy from beginning to end.
