Specialist II Doctor Duong Thi Lan, Deputy Head of the Examination Department, Central Dermatology Hospital, said that the rainy season is the time when many skin diseases increase and become complicated.

During the rainy season, people are often exposed to dirty water and humid environments. These are favorable conditions for skin diseases to develop, from fungus, contact dermatitis to bacterial infections, scabies...

According to Dr. Lan, common skin diseases include: skin fungus, skin infections, contact dermatitis, scabies...

Skin fungus is one of the common diseases after floods. Damage to the toes, especially between the ring finger and the little finger, can appear as red sores or skin abrasions, cracked skin between the toes. In addition, fungus can appear in the groin, armpits, and trunk when the body is in a wet state for a long time.

Skin infections are mainly caused by staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria, often manifested as folliculitis, furuncles, abscesses or cellulitis.

Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin comes into contact with floodwater containing household or industrial waste or cleaning chemicals during cleanup after a flood.

Scabies appears due to lack of clean water, poor sanitation. Patients often have symptoms of blisters, papules on the skin and severe itching, usually at night.

According to Dr. Lan, humid environments and stagnant water containing microorganisms, bacteria, chemicals and heavy metals are the causes of skin diseases outbreaks after floods. When the skin is soaked in flood water for a long time, the skin barrier is weakened, creating conditions for pathogens to penetrate.

Dermatologists recommend that people need to protect their skin when exposed to dirty water or wading in floodwaters.

Avoid direct contact with dirty water. If you must come into direct contact with flood water, use protective gear such as boots to avoid skin contact with dirty water.

When cleaning the house or packing up, use gloves to avoid direct contact with dirty water and chemicals.

If there are signs of minor skin damage such as redness, itching, or scratches after contact, wash immediately with clean water and dry thoroughly, especially in areas with folds such as toes, armpits, and groin. This helps prevent bacterial and fungal infections.

For more serious injuries such as scratches that cause bleeding or skin tears, you should go to a specialized medical facility for examination and treatment to avoid infection.

After exposure to floodwater, thoroughly wash and dry skin areas, especially folds.

In difficult flood conditions, if you cannot get to a medical facility immediately, you can treat the damaged skin on the spot to avoid further damage and prevent infectious complications. Accordingly, everyone should note that washing the wound with clean water is the first and most important step to avoid further damage; keep the injured skin dry. If there is only redness or itching, you can use a moisturizer to help soothe the damage.

Avoid scratching or rubbing the injured skin area, as this can damage the skin's protective barrier, leading to infection.

Doctor Lan recommends not applying leaves or sap (banana, betel...) to the wound, as it can make the injury worse due to contact dermatitis, causing blistering, oozing or infection. In particular, pay attention to prevent tetanus if the wound has torn skin or is bleeding.

For deep or serious wounds, seek medical attention as soon as possible. Children, the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions who experience itching, redness, or infection should seek medical attention promptly.
