Vietnam Social Security denies rumors of cutting health insurance payments from 2026

Vietnam Social Security (VSS) has denied a rumor circulating on social media that states: “From 2026, health insurance will no longer cover serious illnesses or surgeries.”

The 2024 Social Insurance Law has just been issued and will take effect from July 1, 2025, in the direction of continuing to expand and ensure more health insurance benefits for participants, especially for serious illnesses with high treatment costs.

Actual payment of medical examination and treatment costs for health insurance participants

Participants are covered from 80% to 100% of medical examination and treatment costs according to the benefits and levels of the health insurance card.

Vulnerable groups (children under 6 years old, the poor, near-poor, ethnic minorities...) are always guaranteed support by the State for health insurance participation costs.

The Health Insurance Fund pays for more than 10,000 technical services (with many high-tech techniques such as cardiovascular surgery, organ transplants, MRI, CT, PET-CT,...) and pays for 1,037 active pharmaceutical ingredients with thousands of preparations (including many high-cost drugs for treating cancer and serious diseases).

From 2020 to August 2025, 41,188 patients were paid from 500 million to over 2 billion VND for medical examination and treatment costs by the Health Insurance Fund, with a total expenditure of more than 33,000 billion VND. There is a typical case - 1 patient in Vinh Long province was paid for medical examination and treatment costs up to nearly 28 billion VND (main disease: hereditary factor VIII deficiency; acute pharyngitis; open wounds of non-specific and other parts of the abdomen, ...).
