Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment assesses El Nino situation in 2023

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Le Cong Thanh chaired the meeting.

Attending the meeting were Director General of the General Department of Hydrometeorology Tran Hong Thai, leaders representing units: Department of Water Resources Management, National Remote Sensing Department, Institute of Hydrometeorology and Climate Change, along with operational forecasting units of the General Department of Hydrometeorology and 9 regional Hydrometeorological Stations.

At the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh listened to representatives of the General Department of Hydrometeorology and units under the Ministry present and analyze extreme meteorological and hydrological weather trends such as heat, drought, water shortage, risk of heavy rain, storms, floods due to the impacts of El Nino...

The Deputy Minister also requested key regional hydrometeorological stations such as the North Central, Central, and South Central regions to report on the current status and trends in areas at risk of being strongly affected by weather trends in 2023.

Concluding the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Cong Thanh directed the General Department of Hydrometeorology and units under the Ministry to continue to promote coordination with ministries, branches, sectors and localities to grasp forecast information from key areas.

The Deputy Minister also requested the General Department of Hydrometeorology, based on current information and local needs, to promote impact forecasting, detailing each sub-region to ensure hydrometeorological information effectively serves the task of socio -economic development, and is ready and proactive in preventing and mitigating natural disaster risks.
