Minister Le Minh Hoan: Dong Thap needs to research the rice brand of the flood season

To produce responsible agriculture , we must first raise awareness among producers about safe, circular, and modern agricultural production knowledge.

On September 1, in Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province held a conference to review the project "Circular, modern and low-emission agricultural production". Attending was Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan.

Mr. Tran Thanh Nam, Chairman of Tam Nong District People's Committee, said that the project on circular, modern and low-emission agricultural production has been implemented for 2 years and is bringing great success.

Specifically, the winter-spring rice crop, with an area of ​​82 hectares/23 households, was carried out in box 9 and box 10, Phu Thanh A commune. In box 9, with an area of ​​55 hectares/17 households, certified OM18 was planted, with a seed quantity of 100 kg/ha (about 50 kg/ha lower than the model, equivalent to 550,000 VND/kg). Yield 7.5 tons/ha, 300 kg/ha higher than the model, cost 23.8 million VND/ha, production cost 3,173 VND/kg lower than the model, 299 VND/kg. Selling price 8,000 VND/kg, profit more than 36 million VND/ha, 3.6 million VND/ha higher than the model.

Summer-autumn crop, the model was deployed on 80 ha/23 households, also implemented in plot number 9 and plot number 10. The model used certified OM18 variety, seed quantity 100 kg/ha, reduced by 33% compared to outside (about 50 kg/ha), used organic fertilizer to replace part of inorganic fertilizer, reduced by about 25% of inorganic fertilizer compared to outside (about 150 kg/ha). Average yield was 6.7 tons/ha (400 kg/ha higher than outside the model), total cost was 26 VND/ha, lower than outside the model by 793,500 VND/ha, production cost was 3,889 VND/kg, lower than outside the model by 373 VND/kg, average profit was 29.5 million VND/ha, higher than outside the model by 4.1 VND/ha.

According to Mr. Nam, the whole district currently has 170 hectares of organic rice production. In particular, the district is promoting the development of sustainable organic agriculture in the future, has built a plan to use electronic diary recording applications, monitor fields on smart devices. Register the rice brand produced by Quyet Tien Cooperative, and at the same time invest in equipment for post-rice processing such as rice flour, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals. In addition, invite and create favorable conditions for associated companies to invest and consume rice in the model for farmers. Build an economic development model for cooperatives, cooperative groups, guilds, farmers to use local straw resources to reuse to produce straw mushrooms and organic substrates, compost traditional organic fertilizers, make animal feed, contribute to increasing income. Develop rice production associated with ecological technology, create landscapes, attract natural enemies... associated with developing experiential tourism.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, Director of Quyet Tien Cooperative in Phu Thanh A Commune, Tam Nong District, Dong Thap is the person directly implementing the circular, modern and low-emission agricultural production model. Starting from 2023 with an initial area of ​​20 hectares/8 households, by 2024 the area was expanded to 80 hectares/23 households. After 2 years of implementing the model, many farmers responded and participated very satisfied with the technical process such as applying cluster sowing and sparse sowing methods to help reduce the amount of seeds sown by 50 - 70 kg/ha. Using organic fertilizers to replace part of inorganic fertilizers and reduce the amount of inorganic fertilizers by about 30 - 40% compared to outside (about 100 - 150 kg/ha). Reducing the number of spraying pesticides by 2 - 3 times compared to outside the model.

After harvesting, the amount of straw collected from the field is about 87.5% (equivalent to an area of ​​70/80 hectares), the remaining part is sprayed by farmers in the model with Trichoderma fungus to decompose straw to create more nutrients for the soil. Synchronously apply mechanization in production from sowing to harvesting (rice sowing, spraying pesticides, spraying fertilizer, harvesting).

Through many farming seasons, Mr. Tuan realized that the majority of farmers in the cooperative participating in the model have changed their mindset in rice production, boldly applying scientific and technical advances such as using cluster seeders to sow, spraying pesticides with drones, applying organic fertilizers to improve the soil... thereby helping farmers participating in the model reduce production costs and increase profits. In addition to growing rice to take advantage of the flood season, the model also stores fish and organizes flood-season tourism with activities such as netting, picking sesbania flowers, and cooking to help people earn more income and improve their lives.

With the attention of local authorities at all levels, favorable conditions have been created for farmers to participate in the model, regularly opening training courses to improve knowledge on rice cultivation techniques and safe use of plant protection drugs.

With the strong response of the majority of farmers participating in the model, the area is increasingly expanded. It is expected that in the winter-spring crop of 2024 - 2025, the registered area to implement the model will increase by about 120 hectares, Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan excitedly said.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan said that in order to produce modern, circular and low-emission agriculture, it is necessary to first raise awareness among producers and consumers about safe, circular, modern, sustainable, environmentally and ecologically friendly agricultural production. Develop multi-value agriculture, increase income on the same area, sustainably, and ecologically friendly.

At the same time, it is necessary to apply advanced science and technology to production, especially digitalizing farming data. From there, we must convert the traditional agricultural production model to a model that reduces greenhouse gas emissions, aiming to achieve carbon emission reduction credits for the entire project area.

At the conference, the Minister also told the story of circular agriculture (rice - fish - duck) in Thailand, when they produced organic rice products that always sold at many times higher prices than the market and also adapted to climate change. Through this conference, the Minister hoped that Tam Nong district, Dong Thap province should create a brand for rice during the flood season and need community thinking to work together to produce safe agricultural products and increase value.
