Speaking at the welcoming ceremony of the Japan - Mekong Delta Meeting Conference organized by the People's Committee of Can Tho City in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) on the afternoon of August 8 in Can Tho City, Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee Do Thanh Binh shared that the city was honored, happy and excited to be chosen by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of Japan in Vietnam as the venue for the Conference. According to him, this is an event of special importance to strengthen investment cooperation, exchange of experiences and promote economic, social, cultural and tourism development between localities in the Mekong Delta region and Japanese partners.
The Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee said that the Conference is very important, not only an opportunity for both sides to review the cooperation achievements between Japan and the Mekong Delta region in recent times, but also a valuable opportunity to shape and jointly create new directions, contributing to fostering, expanding and deepening the Vietnam - Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in the coming time.
“With a renewed mindset after the merger, a spirit of proactive integration and a desire for sustainable development, Can Tho City in particular and the Mekong Delta in general are ready to be a reliable destination and a strategic partner of Japanese organizations, businesses and localities. I believe that, with the spirit of cooperation, mutual understanding and together moving towards prosperous development, the Meeting with Japan - Mekong Delta will be a great success, opening up great opportunities for cooperation and development between the two sides,” said the Secretary of the Can Tho City Party Committee.

Sharing about the potential and cooperation opportunities between Can Tho City and Japanese agencies, organizations, investors and enterprises, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Tran Van Lau said that with its central position, Can Tho City connects conveniently with Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces in the region; at the same time, it plays the role of a gateway for the Mekong Delta region to connect internationally.
Can Tho is known as the largest agricultural and aquatic center in the country, contributing more than 50% of aquatic product output and over 60% of rice export output of the Mekong Delta. Transport infrastructure is being heavily invested with expressways, creating a network of quick connections to major industrial centers.
Besides, Can Tho is also an educational center, with many universities and research institutes, convenient for cooperation in training high-quality human resources and technology transfer.

According to the head of the People's Committee of Can Tho City, these advantages affirm Can Tho's role as a growth pole of the country, an attractive destination for international investors, especially Japanese enterprises.
Currently, Can Tho City has 13 Japanese projects with a total capital of about 1.6 billion USD. Of which, there are 2 projects of special importance to the city: AEON MALL Can Tho Commercial Center Project invested by AEON MALL Company Limited with a scale of about 8.6 hectares, total investment of about 216 million USD and O Mon II Thermal Power Plant Project invested by the Joint Venture of Construction Trade Joint Stock Corporation (Vietnam) and Marubeni Group (Japan) with a capacity of 1,050 MW, total registered investment capital of 1.3 billion USD. When the projects are put into operation, they will contribute to promoting the socio-economic development of Can Tho City and neighboring areas.
In terms of trade, in the first 6 months of 2025, Can Tho's export turnover to Japan reached 143.76 million USD, mainly seafood and processed agricultural products. Notably, 500 tons of low-carbon Japonica rice of Can Tho enterprises were exported to Japan in May 2025, affirming its ability to meet the strict standards of the Japanese market.

However, the number of Japanese investment projects in Can Tho is still modest. From that, the Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee proposed key orientations to further promote the potential for cooperation between the city and Japan, including:
Firstly, strengthening investment and trade connections: Can Tho City wishes to periodically organize investment fairs and forums and establish a permanent promotion contact with the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) to maintain an effective information exchange channel.
Second, training and transfer of technical standards: Cooperate in training local enterprises on technical standards, regulations, and food safety, as well as invite Japanese experts to advise on improving production, preservation, and processing processes of agricultural and aquatic products.
Third, investing in processing and logistics infrastructure: Calling on Japanese enterprises to invest in industrial parks in the fields of agricultural and aquatic product processing, cold storage technology and logistics, as well as cooperating in building a logistics center serving the entire Mekong Delta region.
Fourth, developing the clean agricultural product value chain: Applying Japanese technology in traceability, preservation and deep processing, while encouraging cooperation between Japanese farmers - businesses - distributors to ensure sustainable output for Can Tho's key agricultural products.
