The difficult journey...

On July 14, 2024, at the 9th Dream Dance Open Cup Sports Dance Championship held in Gia Lai , the team of the Mam Xanh Talent Club from Quang Tri left a strong impression on the audience with professional dance moves and achievements of 4 Gold Medals (HCV), 3 Silver Medals (HCB) and 17 Bronze Medals (HCĐ). This is a major tournament with the participation of more than 1,000 athletes (VĐV) from provinces and cities with a strong development of sports dance movements nationwide.

The achievements of the Mam Xanh Talent Club have contributed to affirming the quality of training as well as the development potential of the sport of dance in the province. This achievement has left a strong mark on female coach Hoang Ngoc Tu Nhi, the club's head.

“When I was young, due to my family circumstances, I did not have the opportunity to be exposed to music or any other art. When I became a student, I was invited by a friend to join the dance club of Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry. I discovered that I had a talent for dancing. When I watched my friends practice, after just a few times, I could feel the movements to the music and remember the movements very quickly. From the initial confusion, my seniors and friends gave me more guidance on social dancing and I gradually fell in love with the graceful dance steps of this subject,” Tu Nhi recounted.

In 2008, Tu Nhi studied sports dancing with Mr. Hoang Cong Thuc, a dedicated and experienced teacher of this subject in Hue City. However, because she was a student, her time and financial conditions were limited, so Tu Nhi was only able to learn basic techniques, mainly for recreational dancing.

After that, she researched, learned more and started participating in sports dance clubs in Dong Ha City. After graduating from the Fine Arts Pedagogy major at Hue University of Arts, she had many opportunities to study and participate in training with some national champions and athletes in sports dance such as Nguyen Chi Anh, Cao Thi Van Diem...

In 2014, Tu Nhi first participated in a sports dance competition in Hai Duong. She shared: “The first time I competed in an out-of-province competition, everything was confusing to me. At this competition, due to poor health from traveling a long distance, I could not achieve the results I wanted, but this was the first milestone that gave me the motivation to practice more.”

With hard work, perseverance and passion, Tu Nhi has diligently traveled to Hanoi once a week to study directly with national dance champion Cao Thi Van Diem. In addition to the geographical space obstacles, this young girl also encountered many economic difficulties because the cost for each dance lesson with the champion was not small. Therefore, to have money to cover her living expenses and continue pursuing her passion, she made the most of her time each day, working as an advertising designer and teaching art on a contract at Trung Vuong School (Dong Ha City) and only practicing on weekends.

During this time, Nhi also regularly participated in sports dance competitions in and outside the province to gain more experience and exchange and learn with people who shared the same passion. Her efforts soon reaped "sweet fruit" when she continuously achieved many commendable achievements at sports dance competitions at the provincial and national levels. From here, Nhi had more motivation to spread her passion, forming the idea of continuing to nurture the province's sports dance talents...

Nurturing green shoots

“Since 2012, I have started teaching social dance to students aged 30-70 in Dong Ha City. However, it was not until I officially started working as a dance teacher for Trung Vuong School students that I came up with the idea of opening an extra class for them after school hours. Sports dance is a subject that has many benefits for children. The graceful movements of the hands and feet to the music, the feeling of the body and understanding of the body make children love themselves more, love the beauty of their body; dancing also helps children relax after stressful hours of studying”, Tu Nhi said.

Since 2014, Tu Nhi opened a dance class for children at the Provincial Cultural - Cinema Center with a friend named Quang Tri Dancesport. In 2015, she taught an after-school dance class at Trung Vuong School named Trung Vuong Dancesport. In 2017, after many years of nurturing the idea and preparing all the conditions, Tu Nhi founded the Mam Xanh Talent Club and decided to focus on developing the Club until now.

From the beginning, there were only 5 students, until now, at the peak time, the club has 50 students. On occasions such as International Children's Day June 1, Mid-Autumn Festival or New Year's Eve, the club organizes performances so that children have the opportunity to interact with the stage and show what they have learned.

“To learn sports dance well, you need to have a real passion and not follow trends, because practicing this subject is very hard. Therefore, in every lesson, I always tell my students that sports dance is only for those who practice seriously, diligently and persistently. Just one movement in the dance can take a practitioner a whole month to understand and do,” she confided.

Under the dedicated training and guidance of Coach Hoang Ngoc Tu Nhi, the "green shoots" have truly matured and confidently participated in dance sports competitions organized by provinces and cities and some national competitions.

In addition to training and teaching in-depth sports dance, Tu Nhi also actively participates in many sports dance competitions nationwide as a coach and referee. At the same time, she also attends training classes of the grandmaster duo Phan Hien - Khanh Thi to improve her skills.

Some outstanding achievements of Mam Xanh Talent Club students at national competitions: Nguyen Cuu Phuc Anh won 4th and 5th place in the youth category (Chachacha and Rumba) at the Youth Championship and National Sports Dance Cup in 2016; Vo Ngoc Gia Linh won 5th/18 in Latin B4 category, 7th/18 in Latin A5 category at the Youth Championship and National Sports Dance Cup in 2023...

“Dancing helps me develop my strengths, overcome my weaknesses and become more confident and bold in society. That is why I always want my students to have the opportunity to change themselves, to stand on the dance floor and “burn” themselves out with passion.

In the future, I will continue to persevere in training and teaching sports dance to my students, focusing on quality dance lessons and trying to create more playgrounds for them to practice and show their talents," Tu Nhi added.
