On February 9, the Ministry of Education and Training issued Decision No. 712 on promulgating the general education program for Korean and German - foreign language 1, 10-year pilot system.

Accordingly, Korean and German will be piloted as the first foreign language in the general education program. This information has attracted public attention, many opinions say that the issuance of this decision will make Korean and German become "compulsory" subjects?

On March 4, the Ministry of Education and Training announced that the teaching of foreign languages ​​in high schools has been implemented for many years. Accordingly, foreign language 1 is a compulsory subject (including English, French, Chinese, Russian, and later Japanese); foreign language 2 is an elective subject (including German and Korean).

After the pilot period of teaching Korean and German as the second foreign language in some localities and achieving results, the learning needs of students are increasing. General education institutions and students have the desire to choose this subject as the first foreign language. Also according to the Ministry of Education and Training, from the above practical needs, and at the same time to reduce the pressure on students when choosing Korean and German as the second foreign language but still having to study another first foreign language in parallel, the Ministry of Education and Training decided to pilot teaching Korean and German as the first foreign language for students to choose according to their needs. This is also the content of the framework agreement between Vietnam and Korea and Germany on teaching Korean and German in Vietnamese high schools.

The Ministry of Education and Training affirmed: “The pilot will be implemented in places where there is a need and conditions for teachers, facilities, and connectivity between levels of education are ensured, and it will be registered with the Ministry of Education and Training. The Ministry of Education and Training will monitor the implementation process to ensure effectiveness and benefits for learners.”

After the pilot period of teaching as the first foreign language, the Ministry of Education and Training said it will evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility, thereby considering officially making Korean and German the first foreign language in the general education program and implementing them equally with other first foreign language subjects.
