President Trump is expected to announce the new tariffs in the White House Rose Garden at 4:00 p.m. EST on April 2, or about 3:00 a.m. Vietnam time on April 3. According to White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt, the reciprocal tariffs on countries that impose tariffs on US goods will take effect immediately after the announcement, while the 25% tariff on imported cars will start on April 3, US time.

No details on the tariffs have been released yet. The Washington Post reports that the administration is considering a plan to impose a 20% import tax on most countries, rather than targeting specific countries or products. This option is expected to generate more than $6 trillion in revenue for the government . Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reports that the US Trade Representative is considering imposing a blanket tariff on a group of countries at a rate lower than 20%.

President Trump has insisted that his trade policies are designed to protect domestic workers and manufacturing from the negative impacts of free trade agreements. He argues that the United States has suffered for decades from global trade imbalances, with a goods trade deficit exceeding $1.2 trillion.

However, many experts warn that high tariffs could increase prices in both the US and global markets, affecting not only the US economy but also the world economy . According to research by Yale University, a 20% tax rate combined with current tax measures could cost the average American household at least $3,400 more per year.
