To produce the 2024 crop with high productivity and output, the agricultural sector and localities in the province are focusing on implementing production plans and projects to ensure the best seasonal schedule.
The whole province strives to finish planting before July 20.
Difficulties and advantages intertwined
According to the assessment of the Thai Binh Hydrometeorological Station, due to the impact of global climate change, in 2024, extreme weather phenomena such as heavy rain, local heat, thunderstorms, tornadoes will occur more frequently and with greater intensity. Strong storms, heavy rain and tropical depressions will occur abnormally, with complex and irregular developments. Heavy rains may occur, but due to the forecast of a shortage of river water compared to the average of many years, there will be times when water supply for production will be difficult.
In addition, the situation of pests in the crop season is often complicated. Due to the short transition time from spring to summer crops, pests accumulate; straw does not have time to decompose, easily causing organic poisoning to newly planted rice. Meanwhile, agricultural workers continue to shift to non-agricultural occupations, especially young workers, causing a labor shortage in production.
Despite such difficulties, in return, the prices of agricultural materials (fertilizers, pesticides) are currently relatively stable, the spring rice crop is good, the price is good, creating conditions and motivation for people to feel secure in production. The direction, management and operation, experience in organizing and implementing at all levels and sectors and the awareness of farmers have been raised, especially in building plans and solutions to prevent and combat adverse weather developments.
Mr. Tran Quoc Duong, Deputy Head of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, said: In recent times, value-added production models have been implemented to create professionalism in production, forming a sustainable production chain that can manage costs and calculate profitably. Many scientific and technical advances, new technologies and new methods of organizing agricultural production have been applied in practice to promote commodity production, creating high and sustainable economic value. The rate of mechanization in cultivation is increasingly high and many professional service stages have been formed (plowing land, sowing trays, transplanting machines, harvesters, drying products...) contributing to reducing production costs and solving the labor shortage in agriculture.
Proactive response solutions
In the 2024 crop, the whole province strives to cultivate over 75,000 hectares, with a yield of over 60 quintals/hectare, and an output of over 450,000 tons. The area of high-quality rice accounts for 45-50%, including varieties Dai Thom 8, Bac Thom No. 7, TBR279, N97, Nhat rice...; the group of high-yield rice, tolerant to intensive cultivation accounts for 50-55% of the area, including varieties: BC15, Thien Uu 8, TBR1, TBR225... Expand the area of rice cultivated by machine to over 25,000 hectares; continue to encourage farmers to accumulate and concentrate land, remove barriers, sow and plant the same varieties and the same tea to expand the scale of fields, making it convenient to apply mechanization and consume products; encourage farmers to buy and use drying equipment to limit post-harvest losses. Continue to improve rice production chains and build rice brands for some advantageous localities, moving towards building a rice brand for Thai Binh province.
Striving to plant over 13,000 hectares of winter-spring rice, Kien Xuong district has so far completed the spring rice harvest, focusing on speeding up the progress of land preparation, field sanitation to prepare conditions for winter-spring rice planting.
Mr. Dinh Cong Man, Head of the District's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, said: To proactively respond to unfavorable weather conditions and plant winter-spring rice in the best time frame, the district recommends that farmers expand the area of machine planting and young rice seedlings, striving for the area of machine planting to reach 40% of the total planting area; not applying direct sowing and at the same time, reserve rice varieties with short growing periods in case of heavy rains causing flooding, killing seedlings and early-season rice.
Farmers in Tay Son commune (Kien Xuong) prepare the land for winter-spring rice planting.
In response to unusual weather developments, the agricultural sector recommends that localities base on land conditions, intensive farming level, infrastructure, weather developments over many years and weather forecast for the 2024 crop season to arrange a reasonable tea structure and rice variety structure.
Engineer Pham Thi Hien, Thai Binh Agricultural Extension Center said: To quickly decompose straw, weeds, and residues in the field, limit organic poisoning during the tillering stage, use products to treat straw such as Sumitri, AT-YTB, Emunix or Azotobacterin, Truong Son Bio or 15 - 20 kg of lime powder/sao to sprinkle. During the crop season, rice plants are susceptible to bacterial leaf blight, so it is necessary to choose rice varieties that are resistant or slightly susceptible to bacterial leaf blight, especially do not sow susceptible varieties in low-lying areas. For early-season rice land to grow warm-loving winter crops, sowing should be done before July 10. The mass planting area should be completed before July 20. Depending on the method of sowing, determine the appropriate sowing schedule, hard base seedlings about 7 - 8 days, thick seedlings about 12 - 15 days old. Sowing time and land preparation should be arranged appropriately. Absolutely do not let the seedlings wait in the field. It is best to prepare the field 1-2 days before transplanting. 1-2 days before transplanting, spray the seedlings with pesticides, especially planthoppers.
By implementing production measures well right from the beginning of the season, localities will be proactive in implementing the set plan, ensuring comprehensive success in crop production in the province.
