Mr. Guterres emphasized that the United Nations is a moral compass, a force for maintaining peace, protecting international law, promoting sustainable development, ensuring human rights, and turning global decisions into concrete actions.
The Secretary-General stressed that in the current context, the international community needs to make five right choices.
First, peace must be based on international law.
Second, is to ensure human rights and dignity by implementing international commitments on human rights, including through increased resource mobilization and reform of the international financial system to further implement the Sustainable Development Goals.
Third, is to promote climate justice and climate action, through sustainable and equitable energy transitions and ensuring resources for green climate through financial mechanisms and policies.
Fourth, use and exploit advanced technology and artificial intelligence to serve the development of the world and humanity.
Fifth, we need to build a more inclusive, transparent, and 21st-century-ready United Nations, including through the UN80 Reform Initiative, revising the 2026 budget to strengthen accountability, improve delivery, and cut costs.
Speaking after the opening session, US President Donald Trump said that the United Nations is an organization with great potential, but there are still many problems that need to be solved.
