Should I choose to use a braided charging cable?

Braided charging cables are becoming more and more popular, but are these accessories worth the money or just a marketing gimmick?

In the accessory market, braided charging cables always have a much higher price than regular rubber cables, accompanied by a high-end and sturdy appearance. But is the price difference really commensurate with the quality, or is this just a form of advertising? Even Apple has switched to braided cables for the iPhone 15 series, causing many users to wonder whether it is worth investing more in this type of accessory?

Although the cable is durable, it still has its own disadvantages.

Should you invest in using a braided charging cable?

The biggest and undeniable plus point of the braided cable is its superior durability. The outer layer is woven from nylon fibers or similar materials to form a strong armor, protecting the inner core of the cable from daily physical agents. They can withstand constant bending at the connection points - the weakest point of a normal charging cable, as well as resist friction when being balled up, stuffed in a bag or backpack.

Thanks to the above structural advantages, parachute cables are also less prone to tangles than rubber cables. Their reliability has been proven when they are preferred in fields that require high durability such as automotive wiring systems or aerospace.

However, this durability comes with certain trade-offs. The biggest drawback of braided cables is their stiffness and tendency to ‘wrinkle remember’. After a period of use, they will retain their creases, making it difficult to straighten or bend as desired in tight spaces. This problem is especially evident in cheaper braided cables. Additionally, because they are thicker and stiffer, they can put more pressure on the device’s charging port if the user is not careful when plugging and unplugging.

In terms of cost, a braided cable can cost 30-50% more than a rubber cable from the same brand. For example, a regular Anker or Belkin cable can cost around 150,000 VND, but the braided version will cost 230,000 VND or more.

So should you invest in a braided charging cable? The answer depends on your priorities. If you’re a frequent traveler, prone to damaging cables, and value long-term durability, then a braided cable is definitely worth the money. But if you’re primarily using it in a stationary environment at home or in the office and value flexibility, a good quality rubber cable is still a reasonable choice.
