Apple has officially discontinued the iPhone Plus line after the 16 generation, making way for the iPhone Air in the iPhone 17 series. With a thin, light design and many new technologies, the iPhone Air is considered the perfect replacement. So, when compared to the iPhone 16 Plus, what is outstanding and different about the iPhone Air?
Ultra-thin and lightweight design
The most noticeable point is that the iPhone Air has a much thinner design: only 5.64 mm compared to 7.80 mm on the iPhone 16 Plus. The weight is also reduced to 165 g, significantly lighter than 199 g.
The overall dimensions of the Air are more compact: 156.2 mm high and 74.7 mm wide, smaller than the 160.9 mm and 77.8 mm of the 16 Plus. The rear camera cluster is made to overflow the edge, creating a difference compared to the old design.
More minimalist colors
Apple minimized the color palette on the iPhone Air, with only 4 options: Sky Blue, Light Yellow, Cloud White and Space Black. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16 Plus has up to 5 colors, more prominent with the options of Dark Blue, Pink or Turquoise.
Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion
The iPhone Air has a 6.55-inch Super Retina XDR display, slightly smaller than the 6.69-inch 16 Plus, but superior with 120Hz ProMotion technology. The screen supports a flexible refresh rate from 1Hz to 120Hz, saving battery and smoother.
The Always-On Display feature also appears on the Air, allowing widgets, time, and notifications to be displayed even when the device is in sleep mode.
In particular, the iPhone Air has a maximum brightness of 3,000 nits outdoors, higher than the 2,000 nits of the previous generation, combined with a new anti-reflective coating, providing twice as good outdoor visibility.
Outstanding performance with A19 Pro chip
Equipped with the A19 Pro chip, the iPhone Air is much more powerful than the iPhone 16 Plus with A18. The new neural accelerator helps improve AI, while the GPU increases computing power by 3 times.
It also has 12GB of RAM, more than the 8GB of the iPhone 16 Plus, allowing for smoother multitasking. Apple claims the A19 Pro's performance is close to the MacBook Pro.
MagSafe batteries, chargers, and accessories
Despite being thinner, the iPhone Air maintains the same battery life as the iPhone 16 Plus, with 27 hours of offline video playback. However, online video playback time is slightly reduced (22 hours vs. 24 hours).
When combined with the MagSafe battery, the iPhone Air allows for up to 40 hours of video playback, compared to 27 hours on the 16 Plus. Charging is also faster, reaching 50% in just 30 minutes with a 20W charger or higher.
Camera: Innovation and Cutbacks
To achieve record thinness, the iPhone Air has removed the ultra-wide-angle camera. However, the device still retains the 48MP Fusion Wide camera with 2x lossless zoom.
Notably, the all-new Center Stage front camera with 18MP square sensor helps automatically align the frame during FaceTime and video calls. In addition, dual-camera mode allows simultaneous use of the front and rear cameras.
New network technology
The iPhone Air is equipped with Apple's self-developed N1 wireless network chip, supporting Bluetooth 6 and dual-frequency GPS. Combined with the C1X modem, the device is twice as fast as the C1 modem on the iPhone 16e, consumes less power but does not support mmWave 5G.
Price and version
The iPhone Air starts at $999 for 256GB, the same as the iPhone 16 Plus with the same capacity, but without the cheaper 128GB version. The 512GB and 1TB versions cost $1,199 and $1,399, respectively.

The iPhone Air is a major step forward in Apple's strategy, replacing the Plus line with a thinner, lighter, and more powerful device, with ProMotion technology, the A19 Pro chip, and an improved front camera. However, the trade-off is the lack of an ultra-wide camera and less memory capacity.
