The submarine that explored the wreck of the Titanic that disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean on June 18 is being searched for. It is known that 5 people were on board this submarine, including the famous British billionaire and explorer Hamish Harding, according to the Express newspaper.
The US Coast Guard estimates the ship has enough emergency oxygen for 96 hours – the equivalent of four days.
The sinking of the Titanic has gone down in history along with the mysteries surrounding it.
From the above incident, let's find out how long a person can live without oxygen.
According to the medical website Medical News Today , if the brain is deprived of oxygen for more than 5 minutes, the victim's brain begins to be damaged, and cells begin to die. This condition, if not treated immediately, can lead to death.
However, all of the above risks depend on many factors, including each person's body size, health, gender...
Loss of oxygen is the final stage of survival, explains Mike Tipton, a professor at the University of Portsmouth (UK) who studies people who survive long periods without air underwater.
As oxygen levels drop, brain function declines, leading to symptoms of confusion and poor decision-making, Tipton said. One of the things that happens is that people with hypoxia start to lose their peripheral vision and end up focusing on a single point.
When oxygen levels decrease, brain function decreases.
Professor Tipton studied 43 separate medical cases of people who had been underwater for long periods of time. Of these, four involved people who had survived underwater for at least 66 minutes – including a girl who was just two and a half years old.
Children and women are more likely to survive underwater because their bodies tend to cool more quickly, Tipton added. Rapidly cooling the brain can increase survival time without oxygen. If the temperature drops by 10 degrees, the metabolic rate will decrease by half to a third, according to Express.
Research also shows that the human body can adapt to longer periods without oxygen.
For example, members of the Bajau tribe in Indonesia can dive to depths of 70 meters while holding their breath when catching fish, and a diver can hold their breath for up to 13 minutes underwater, according to Express .
