However, before the iPhone Air was launched, the market had 2 other super thin products, more specifically foldable screen smartphones, belonging to Oppo and Honor.

iPhone Air opens the "supermodel" race

One of the points that attracted the attention of global users at Apple's recent iPhone 17 launch event was the iPhone Air, which was introduced as the thinnest iPhone version ever.

With a thickness of only 5.6mm - users can test by stacking 7-8 bank cards on top of each other to find out the thickness of the current iPhone Air smartphone.

Despite being very thin, the iPhone Air uses a titanium frame that makes the product both elegant and light while still being durable.

According to Apple, the back of the iPhone Air is protected by Ceramic Shield and the front is equipped with Ceramic Shield 2, providing 3x better scratch resistance, making the iPhone Air more durable than any previous iPhone.

“The all-new iPhone Air is so incredibly powerful and so incredibly thin and light that it’s hard to believe until you hold it in your hand. This leap in design and engineering was only made possible through Apple’s innovative technology, specifically Apple silicon,” said John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering.

Oppo has the world's thinnest folding smartphone?

Before the iPhone Air was launched, Oppo surprised the market by introducing the Find N5, the world's thinnest folding smartphone, when folded at only 8.93mm and opened at only 4.21mm.

At 229g, the Find N5 is even lighter than many bar-shaped flagships, providing a comfortable, solid grip and a natural user experience.

According to Oppo, despite its thinness, the frame is made from 7,000-layer aluminum alloy, increasing durability by 30%, protecting the device better when impacted. In addition, the ultra-thin Nanocrystal glass also helps the outer screen improve drop resistance by up to 20%.

This product also has TÜV Rheinland durable folding screen certification - one of the most stringent durability assessment standards on the market.

Pete Lau, Senior Vice President and Chief Product Officer of OPPO Global, said: "Find N5 unlocks the potential of foldable phones, bringing tablet and laptop experiences to the palm of your hand."

Honor - a formidable opponent in the "supermodel" race

As early as late 2024, Honor was one of the first smartphone companies to join the ultra-thin race with the Magic V3 - considered the thinnest foldable smartphone in the world at that time. Specifically, the product is only 4.35 mm thin when opened and 9.2 mm when folded, and weighs only 226g.

With a compact design equivalent to a regular bar phone, but Honor Magic V3 can bring more experiences thanks to the display space that is twice as wide when opened.

Not only that, in July this year, this company also launched in the Chinese market the successor product of V3, the Magic V5, with a super thin design of only 8.8mm when folded and about 4.1mm - 4.2mm when opened, depending on the color version.

The weight is also optimized, with the white version weighing only 217g, the lightest in the product line. The black, yellow, and red-brown versions weigh about 222g.

Although thinner, compared to the previous generation, Magic V5 has a 12% increase in battery capacity, from 5,150mAh to 6,100mAh for the Chinese version and the international version has a capacity of 5,820mAh.
