Opening the "way" out of poverty

The bridge and concrete road, more than a kilometer long, with a total investment of more than 1.7 billion VND, have just been completed and put into use to serve the travel needs of 27 ethnic minority households in Group 1, Tan Hiep village, Tra My commune.

Since this route was put into use, local people feel more secure when their children go to school, no longer isolated during the rainy season, high water. Agricultural products are also purchased by traders, transported conveniently, without losing value.

The number of poor households in Tan Hiep village is decreasing thanks to the support policies from infrastructure to people's livelihoods. For example, Mr. Ho Van Dung's household was supported with 2 breeding cows and 70 million VND to remove temporary houses.

With that support, Mr. Dung and his wife rose up to do business and escaped poverty in 2024. Mr. Dung said: “Since the bridge and road were invested by the state, planting acacia and transportation have become easier, so my family has a stable source of income. With the support of the state, I borrowed an additional 100 million VND from the Social Policy Bank, both investing in building a house and planting more acacia. My wife and I tried to do business, gradually rising up to escape poverty, having the conditions to take care of our children's education."

Mr. Ho Tan Minh's family in Tan Hiep village also escaped poverty in 2024 thanks to policy support and the will to rise up of the couple. Mr. Minh said: "My family was supported with orange and pomelo seeds, 3 breeding pigs, and now the garden has produced fruit for sale, and the pigs have bred to sell piglets. It's the same everywhere, if you want to do anything, you need roads and bridges for people to be able to do business. We can grow the trees and raise the livestock, but they have to go to endless places to buy them to get a price."

The “key” to sustainable poverty reduction

According to Mr. Nguyen Van Bang - Party Cell Secretary and Head of Tan Hiep village, the village has a 70% ethnic minority population and has long been a particularly difficult village with a high rate of poor households.

In recent years, with the investment of state resources in infrastructure such as bridges, roads, canals, etc., people's travel, business and production have become much more convenient than before. This has contributed to a significant reduction in the poverty rate of the village. The whole village had 241 households, now there are 34 poor households and 21 near-poor households.

These poor households will continue to receive support from the village and commune in their livelihoods, vocational training, and employment... to continue to sustainably reduce poverty in the coming time.

Infrastructure works in Tra My commune invested from capital sources of national target programs such as sustainable poverty reduction, socio-economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas have initially taken effect.

Up to now, all 17 villages in the commune have roads, basically meeting the travel needs of the people. Convenient transportation helps people promote trade of goods, contributing to changing the production mindset of ethnic minorities from self-sufficiency to market economy, increasing the value of agricultural products, raising income, and sustainably reducing poverty.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Su - Vice Chairman of Tra My Commune People's Committee said that the commune's infrastructure is focused on synchronous investment according to new rural criteria, in which priority is given to investment in essential infrastructure such as traffic, schools, irrigation, domestic water, etc. to ensure effective service to people's lives and production development.

The maintenance of the transport network has been expanded, the inter-village transport system has been built to ensure standards and techniques according to the regulations of the Ministry of Transport . Because it is a mountainous commune with many difficulties, resources from national target programs have helped Tra My commune have better conditions to invest in infrastructure.

“To sustainably reduce poverty in mountainous areas, the first condition is to have a guaranteed infrastructure. If people want to do business, develop, and increase the value of agricultural products, they must have bridges and roads for convenient travel and trade. In the coming time, the commune will integrate and effectively use investment resources to improve people's lives,” said Mr. Su.
