South Korea's health crisis: "The door for dialogue remains open"

Regarding the prolonged doctors' strike, the South Korean Health Ministry affirmed that "the door to dialogue is still open" and the Government is ready to negotiate at any time in any form.

South Korea's Health Ministry on May 23 called for dialogue among medical workers to resolve a months-long strike by trainee doctors, although there appears to be no sign of the situation improving, Yonhap news agency reported.

Speaking at a meeting on the issue, Health Minister Cho Kyoo-hong affirmed that "the door to dialogue is still open" and the government is ready to negotiate at any time in any form and on any topic.

A day earlier, the Korean Medical Association said it was ready to negotiate with the government.

The government welcomed the move but stressed that it could not accept the doctors' preconditions, such as adjusting the plan to increase the quota for medical students or postponing the plan for another year.

Since February this year, more than 12,000 South Korean medical residents and interns have not gone to hospitals to protest the government's plan to increase medical student enrollment quotas, causing a severe medical crisis in the country.
