Step by step poverty reduction in Long Son

Long Son village (Tra My commune) has 328 households with about 65% of households being Ca Dong ethnic people, currently there are 28 poor households and 3 near-poor households. Over the years, policies from programs and projects have invested in total to help Long Son gradually reduce poverty sustainably.

Ms. Ho Thi Sai, a single mother of two children, is one of the poor households in Tra My commune that received support to remove temporary houses. Ms. Sai said: “The government supported 60 million VND to build a new house, combined with savings and neighbors helping with labor, and now the house is almost completed. My family will no longer have to worry about the upcoming rainy season, and can live in peace and escape poverty.”

Ms. Cao Thi Trinh, Head of Long Son village, said that 5 years ago, the total number of poor households in the village was approximately 50%. Thanks to the State's policies on investing in infrastructure, electricity, roads, livelihood models, and eliminating temporary housing, the poverty rate has decreased significantly.

“The resettlement and removal of temporary housing has had a positive impact on helping people settle down. In addition, people are supported with vocational training, livestock and farming methods suitable to local conditions. By 2025, Long Son will no longer have temporary housing, and roads will be invested in and expanded. In the coming time, the village will continue to effectively develop tourism in Cao Son village, contributing to improving people's lives,” said Ms. Trinh.

In the poverty reduction campaign, people's awareness of rising up has clearly changed, especially the spirit of volunteering to join hands with the State in donating land to open roads.

To have land to build roads into villages and fields, many households such as Mr. Dinh Van Sum's household donated up to 1,650 square meters of field land; households Dinh Thi Ha, Dinh Van Phuong, and Vo Thi Phuoc each donated more than 400 square meters of field land to open roads.

People's participation along with investment resources and State policies help improve infrastructure and raise people's lives.

Integrating resources for poverty reduction

From 2021 to present, Tra My commune has effectively implemented national target projects and programs on sustainable poverty reduction. Accordingly, the average annual poverty reduction rate has reached 5.4%, with the whole commune now having 374 poor households and 182 near-poor households.

Many solutions in poverty reduction support have been implemented synchronously by the locality. From national target programs such as sustainable poverty reduction, new rural construction, socio -economic development in ethnic minority and mountainous areas..., infrastructure has been invested, contributing to local socio-economic development.

For the poverty reduction movements in Tra My, sectors and unions continue to help poor households with many practical activities such as supporting livelihoods, sponsoring disadvantaged children, helping with vocational training, and creating jobs for workers in poor households.

In 5 years, the commune has opened vocational training classes for 609 workers, contributing to creating conditions for workers to have jobs and sustainable poverty reduction.

In particular, for the campaign to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, Tra My commune has provided support from resources to build new houses and repair 257 houses for families in difficult circumstances, with a total cost of more than 15 billion VND.

Chairman of Tra My Commune People's Committee Ngo Quoc Vuong said that poverty reduction and improving people's living standards are top priorities. All economic and social development programs aim to improve people's income.

Mr. Vuong said: “To develop the economy, society, reduce poverty sustainably, and improve people's living standards, Tra My commune will focus on many solutions to support people in the coming time. In infrastructure investment, many resources will be integrated, creating changes in all aspects for Tra My to rise up.

The commune will replicate economic development models of agricultural and forestry production, animal husbandry, medicinal plant cultivation, development of Tra My cinnamon trees, development of farm economy, family farms, fruit trees, etc.

Along with that is calling for and attracting investment in rural and mountainous areas, creating more jobs on the spot for people...

The goal for the 2025 - 2030 period is to reduce the poverty rate by an average of 0.6% per year according to the multidimensional poverty standard, and by 2030 it will be below 5%. To achieve this goal, Tra My must make efforts, synchronise solutions and be suitable to local realities.
