Fountain criticized as 'the ugliest in the world'

The newly built $2 million fountain in Vienna, Austria, is considered by many to be "the ugliest in the world " because its shape is not as beautiful as expected.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the modern water supply system that brought Vienna fresh water from streams in the Alps, the Austrian capital city launched a design competition to build the fountain. Despite the criticism, Mayor Michael Ludwig said the fountain was an extraordinary design, inspired by reality and created a sense of togetherness. Faced with criticism that it had wasted $2 million on “the ugliest fountain in the world,” the city said it had managed to save $300,000.
