Both players Lai Ly Huynh and Le Phan Hoang Quan are from Ho Chi Minh City. The above titles not only bring glory to Vietnamese chess but also contribute to the achievements, welcoming the 1st Congress of Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, term 2025-2030.
At the 2025 World Youth Chess Championship, Hoang Quan was the only player among the 6 Vietnamese representatives to win a medal. To achieve this achievement, Hoang Quan had to go through 11 intense matches with many strong players of the same age in the U10 men's group.
In the final game, Hoang Quan held the black piece to move as queen but still excelled in defeating the player Ivanovic Leonid (Serbia). After 11 games, the young player from Ho Chi Minh City won 8 games, drew 2 games, lost 1 game, and scored 9 points, equal to the player Yuan Shunzhe (China) but ranked second due to losing the extra index.
Throughout the competition, the young player from Ho Chi Minh City always maintained a stable performance, played steadfastly and always showed a high determination. In particular, the victory in the key matches helped Hoang Quan achieve his best personal achievement ever.
Vietnamese chess has witnessed many young world champions, namely Dao Thien Hai (U16 in 1993), Nguyen Thi Dung (U12 in 1994), Hoang Thanh Trang (U20 in 1998), Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son (U10 in 2000), Le Quang Liem (U14 in 2005), Tran Minh Thang (U8 in 2008), Nguyen Anh Khoi (U10 in 2012, U12 in 2014), Nguyen Le Cam Hien (U8 in 2015) and Dau Khuong Duy (U12 in 2023). Although he could not win the highest medal like his seniors before, Hoang Quan's achievements were still very impressive, showing the great efforts and potential of the player born in 2015.
Before winning the World Youth Silver Medal, Hoang Quan won the 2023 Asian Youth Gold Medal, the 2023 Southeast Asian Rapid and Blitz Chess Gold Medal, and the 2025 National Youth Gold Medal. In addition to his passion for chess, Hoang Quan is also good at Chinese chess and won a gold medal in this sport at the age of 9.
In addition to his achievements in competitions, Hoang Quan pays great attention to studying, always striving to be an excellent student. Hoang Quan loves Math and English and has achieved many achievements in Math competitions at district and city levels. Hoang Quan was also honored to become one of the 18 "Children of the Year" voted by Vietnam Children's Magazine in 2023.
Winning the silver medal at the World Youth Championship is an important milestone for Hoang Quan, affirming his talent and potential for long-term development in the future. This achievement also contributes to raising the position of Vietnamese chess on the world map. From winning the championship at national, regional, continental youth tournaments and now being the world runner-up, Hoang Quan is showing great ability and progress. The 10-year-old player's achievements do not come from luck but are the result of a serious and persistent training process under the guidance of coaches.
In addition, the companionship and support from family and school also play an important role, helping me have more motivation to pursue my passion for this intellectual sport . This achievement is not only my own pride, but also a precious gift for Vietnamese chess, affirming that the young generation is ready to follow the lead of their seniors to bring Vietnamese intelligence to the world.
Hoang Quan’s World Youth Silver Medal is a great source of encouragement, adding confidence to the young players who are nurturing their dreams with chess. It shows that, with the right investment, persistent training and burning passion, young Vietnamese players can absolutely step into the international arena and reap glory.
From Le Phan Hoang Quan to Lai Ly Huynh, from chess to Chinese chess, these two resounding achievements have affirmed the Vietnamese chess brand in the international arena. If Chinese chess continues to promote its traditional strengths to win prestigious titles, then chess - a globally popular intellectual sport, proves the ability to rise with courage of Vietnamese youth.
This parallel creates a comprehensive picture of the development of the country's intellectual sports. It can be said that the continuous success in the world arena is the motivation for Vietnamese chess players to continue investing, improving the quality of training and expanding international competition opportunities for players. The gold medal in the world chess championship and the silver medal in the world youth chess championship are not only the pride of the players, but also a vivid proof of the aspiration to rise up and be ready to conquer new heights of Vietnamese intellectual sports.
