Affirming the position of Hanoi's craft villages

In mid-September 2025, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) in coordination with the Hanoi Association of Handicrafts and Craft Villages, the People's Committee of Bat Trang Commune and the People's Committee of Chuyen My Commune jointly organized a Conference to exchange experiences in building craft villages to become members of the world network of creative craft cities.

Here, Head of the Rural Development Department, Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment Hoang Thi Hoa emphasized that the success of Bat Trang ceramic craft village and Van Phuc silk village in becoming members of the world network of creative craft cities has affirmed the strength and potential of Hanoi's craft villages in recent times, and is also the pride of the capital.

According to Ms. Hoa, participating in this network opens up opportunities for Hanoi craft villages in general and Chuyen My mother-of-pearl inlay craft village in particular to affirm their position, expand development cooperation, and bring the capital's handicraft products closer to the international community.

Through many inspections, surveys and learning experiences in localities, members of the working group exchanged and shared valuable information in building and developing craft villages towards international integration.

According to the representative of the People's Committee of Bat Trang commune, Bat Trang ceramic craft village is currently preserving traditional techniques, applying technology and promoting e-commerce, while developing a model associated with experiential tourism, attracting domestic and foreign tourists. This activity contributes to arousing the love of the profession for the younger generation, continuing the tradition of their ancestors.

Appreciating the experiences from other craft villages, Chairman of Chuyen My Commune People's Committee Nguyen Huu Chi shared that learning from the experiences of Bat Trang, Van Phuc and Son Dong will help the locality continue to perfect its projects, aiming to be recognized as a member of the world creative craft network. He said that Chuyen My has a long history of mother-of-pearl inlay and lacquer craft, hundreds of households are diligently preserving the craft and dozens of artisans have been recognized at the city and national levels. This is an opportunity for the locality to honor the cultural heritage of traditional crafts, while promoting economic development, tourism and promoting products to the world.

Creativity associated with conservation and sustainable development

Also at the Conference, Chairwoman of the Hanoi Handicraft and Craft Villages Association Ha Thi Vinh said that building creative craft villages must be associated with conservation, sustainable development and international market expansion. To join the world network of creative craft cities, craft villages need a systematic strategy and clear plans for each stage.

According to Ms. Vinh, from the successful model, Hanoi can replicate it in other localities to exploit the full potential of the land of hundreds of crafts, bringing the beauty and cultural values of the capital to international friends. Craft villages should not only focus on production but also need to become “living museums”, telling stories about history and culture through each product. Creativity is the key to enhancing the brand of craft villages.

Sharing the same view, Mr. Cao Van Tam, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Son Dong commune, said that participating in the world creative craft network is also a great opportunity for the craft village to widely promote the traditional values of wood carving. The local government will continue to accompany artisans in innovating designs, combining new technology but still preserving traditional quintessence, making Son Dong a bright spot in the integration process.

From the perspective of the state management agency, Deputy Head of the Hanoi Rural Development Department Ha Tien Nghi highly appreciated the efforts and learning spirit of the craft villages. The capital's agricultural sector will continue to coordinate with the Craft Village Association and localities to prepare documents, creating a solid foundation for craft villages to join the world craft network, contributing to enhancing Hanoi's position on the global cultural and economic map.

A representative of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment affirmed that proactively connecting typical craft villages is an important step, contributing to affirming the position of "City for Peace" and "Creative City" of the Capital in the region and the world.
