Before G-hour
Tomorrow (June 26), more than 17,300 candidates in Ha Tinh will officially take the Literature exam of the 2025 high school graduation exam. Compared to previous years, this year's high school graduation exam has a change that many students and teachers are particularly interested in because this is the first year the exam is organized according to the 2018 general education program with the orientation of developing students' qualities and abilities.
One of the notable new points in the Literature subject is that the exam will use materials outside of the textbook, such as paragraphs, poems or situations related to current events and social life. Instead of testing the ability to memorize works, the exam will focus on assessing the candidates' thinking ability, literary appreciation and ability to express themselves. With many innovative elements, the Literature exam makes students and teachers excited, expectant, expectant and somewhat worried.

This afternoon (June 25), more than 17,300 candidates participating in the 2025 High School Graduation Exam were present at the exam sites to complete exam registration procedures. |
Tran Thi Bao Ngoc - Class 12A1, Cu Huy Can High School, Vu Quang District ( Ha Tinh ) said that to prepare for the high school graduation exam, she spent a lot of time reviewing knowledge, reading and referring to many types of questions that teachers required. However, Ngoc said she was quite nervous and curious about the type of questions in this year's Literature exam.
“In the days leading up to the exam, I reviewed the previous questions and read more evidence. I prepared myself with a lot of knowledge, practiced my reading comprehension skills and prepared a 'storehouse' of social evidence to be able to flexibly handle all situations,” Bao Ngoc shared.
Bao Ngoc believes that the exam format that does not use textbook materials will be very close to reality. However, she also hopes that the exam will have 'open materials' and 'open answers', so that students have the opportunity to express their own understanding and thinking without being stereotyped.
“Not using materials forces us to self-perceive and self-think based on the knowledge we have learned. With this new format and structure, we are more comfortable, and at the same time, we have to pay attention to current and social issues around us,” said Bao Ngoc.
Students will have more "room to perform"
Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Giang - Literature teacher, Hong Linh High School (Ha Tinh) shared that with many innovations in this year's Literature exam, it has shown the spirit of encouraging independent, creative, non-stereotypical thinking, while also reflecting the "open" orientation in the 2018 general education program. Instead of memorizing model texts, students are encouraged to approach literature and life in a more flexible, proactive and multi-dimensional way.
However, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Giang, this change has opened up opportunities and posed many challenges. In terms of opportunities, students are no longer limited to fixed texts, which helps them to apply social knowledge and personal experiences to analyze and evaluate problems. Students have more "room" to express their opinions, personalities and language abilities. In terms of challenges, some students are not familiar with reading and understanding texts outside of textbooks, and lack the skills to quickly analyze, draw conclusions and make connections.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quynh Giang also shared that to do well on the exam with materials outside of the textbook, students need to prepare some core skills. In particular, students need to have the ability to read quickly, know how to skim to grasp the main idea, then read carefully the key parts to analyze. From there, they know how to analyze, infer, find the message of the text, and connect with their own knowledge and experience to clarify the problem. Along with that, students need to know how to present their thoughts clearly, logically, emotionally and with strong arguments.
“Before the exam, what I always remind students is to stay calm, believe in their own abilities, read the questions carefully, analyze the questions carefully and write in their own voice and thoughts. A sincere, clear, and in-depth essay will always make a good impression on the examiner,” teacher Quynh Giang shared.
Mr. Phan Van Hoa - Literature teacher at Nguyen Trung Thien High School assessed that the innovations in this year's Literature exam will promote students' qualities and abilities in accordance with the orientation of the 2018 general education program. Avoid copying, using sample texts, learning by rote, and learning in a biased way like before.
"Now the materials will be used outside of the textbook, requiring students to think and the results will reflect their true abilities," Mr. Hoa shared.
According to teacher Phan Van Hoa, to do well on the exam, students need to have reading comprehension and analytical skills. They must pay special attention to current events and practical knowledge from society. Current events, political and social issues are easy to include in the exam, such as issues related to youth, the country, etc.
