Proposal to invest 28,500 billion VND to build Can Tho 2 bridge across Hau river

The Can Tho 2 Bridge construction investment project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge are the final piece of the puzzle on the North-South Expressway in the East in the Mekong Delta region.

The My Thuan Project Management Board has just submitted a document requesting the Ministry of Construction to review and appraise the Pre-Feasibility Study Report for the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.

According to the latest proposal, the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge have the starting point connecting with Cha Va intersection, which is the end point of the My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway Project on the Vinh Long side (about Km129+177 - CT01); the end point connecting with IC2 intersection (intersection with the road connecting National Highway 91 - Nam Song Hau) and is the starting point of the Can Tho - Hau Giang - Ca Mau Expressway Project (about Km146+377 - CT01).

The total length of the Project study is about 17.2 km, of which the approach road and bridge on the Vinh Long side is about 11.9 km long (in the territory of Binh Minh ward, Cai Von ward, Dong Thanh ward); the main bridge is about 1.1 km long; the approach bridge and overpass on the Can Tho side is 4.2 km long (Hung Phu ward).

The project includes the construction of Can Tho 2 bridge across the main channel of Hau river (total navigation width of 300 m, of which the main channel is 110 m x 40 m and the two side channels are 95 m x 31 m from water level H5%), the main span is expected to be a cable-stayed bridge; the approach road (including a number of medium and small bridges on the route) is designed with geometric elements (plan, longitudinal profile) meeting the standards of a class 100 highway.

In this submission, My Thuan Project Management Board still proposed 2 options for implementing the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge.

Specifically, option I: Construction of a highway bridge and independent railway has a preliminary total investment of VND 24,265 billion, of which construction and equipment costs are VND 16,817 billion; project management, consulting and other costs are VND 1,682 billion; contingency costs are VND 3,098 billion; compensation, support and resettlement costs are VND 2,668 billion.

Option II: Construction of a combined road and railway bridge has a preliminary total investment of VND 28,455 billion, of which construction and equipment costs are VND 19,646 billion; project management, consulting and other costs are VND 1,965 billion; contingency costs are VND 3,739 billion; compensation, support and resettlement costs are VND 3,225 billion.

My Thuan Project Management Board proposed to use State budget capital to invest in the Project with the expected implementation time of starting construction in 2026 and basically completing in 2030.

The Can Tho 2 Bridge construction investment project is a connecting section of the My Thuan - Can Tho and Can Tho - Ca Mau expressways, part of the North - South expressway system in the East and is one of two longitudinal routes in the Mekong Delta region.

This is also the route connecting the two horizontal highways Chau Doc - Can Tho - Soc Trang and Ha Tien - Rach Gia - Bac Lieu. The investment in the construction of the new Can Tho 2 bridge contributes to completing the traffic network in the region, connecting economic centers, new urban areas and traffic hubs (airports, river ports, seaports...) in provinces and cities such as Vinh Long, Can Tho and Ca Mau.

At the same time, the project also contributes to reducing traffic congestion on National Highway 1, ensuring traffic safety in the area, creating conditions to promote economic, cultural and social development and ensuring national security and defense in the southwestern region in particular and the whole country in general.

In addition, the Can Tho 2 Bridge Construction Investment Project is the final piece of the North-South Expressway in the East of the Mekong Delta region (connecting the My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway and the Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway), which is the expressway that serves as the backbone system of the country, ensuring the continuous, high-speed transport of goods and passengers in large volumes.
