Dramatic and memorable Merseyside derby

Many red cards and draws

Since the inception of the Premier League, no match has seen as many red cards as Everton and Liverpool, the famous Merseyside derby. Now, when Everton's Goodison Park hosted the Merseyside derby for the last time, history was made again in the final moments. Players from both sides, coaching staff and even policemen clashed. The referee had to show red cards to Abdoulaye Doucoure (Everton), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), coach Arne Slot (Liverpool) and his assistant Sibke Hulshoff.

Emotional match between Everton (left) and Liverpool

Before this match, both Liverpool and Everton had won 41 times and drawn 37 times at Goodison Park. Now neither team has come out on top, as the last match ended with 4 goals shared between the two sides. Beto opened the scoring quite early for Everton, but Liverpool led 2-1 thanks to Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah. In the 90+8 minute (the match was originally scheduled to have only 5 minutes of added time), James Tarkowski equalized 2-2 with a volley that burned the net. The balance after 141 years of confrontation at Goodison Park has finally not changed. In the last 13 times Everton hosted Liverpool in the Premier League, the result has been a draw 10 times.

The chaotic scenes at the end of the match were triggered by Tarkowski's dramatic equaliser, and the way Everton players celebrated, right in front of Liverpool's supporters and substitutes. With this result, an Everton that was at the bottom of the table at the start of the season continued to show progress (won 3, drew 1 in the last 4 matches). Last season, the important milestone that helped Everton stay in the league was also the match against Liverpool at Goodison Park (won 2-0), 4 rounds before the end of the race. Meanwhile, Liverpool thought they had widened the gap with second-placed Arsenal to 9 points, now unfortunately lost 2 points.

Salah makes history

The cross that assisted Mac Allister's goal was the 22nd time Salah has been directly involved in a goal (scored or assisted) in Liverpool's away games in the Premier League this season. Salah then increased his tally to 23 in the next goal. The previous record was 21 goals by Andy Cole (Newcastle) in the 1993-1994 season. Salah's new record will certainly increase significantly, as this is only the 24th round.

This is the 9th time this season that Salah has both scored and assisted in a Premier League match. No player has ever surpassed the record of both scoring and assisting in 8 matches in a season. In total, Salah has both scored and assisted for Liverpool in 40 different Premier League matches. Anfield fans are obviously very impatient about the "stay or go" story of hero Salah. His contract with Liverpool will expire at the end of this season. In the near future, there is still the return match for Salah to break another important record in Liverpool's colors. Only Steven Gerrard has scored more goals than Salah (9 compared to 8) in Merseyside derbies. The return match will take place at Liverpool's home stadium, Anfield.

Anfield was originally the home ground of Everton in its early days. The owner of the ground was also the club's Chairman John Houlding. Because of political and financial opposition to Houlding, the Everton board bought another piece of land to build the stadium. In fact, that piece of land was just at the other end of Stanley Park. Goodison Park was built there. Houlding stayed at Anfield and founded another team, Liverpool. On October 13, 1894, Liverpool and Everton met in their first derby. Now this is the longest-running derby in the English national championship. The two sides have clashed continuously at the highest level of English football since the 1962-1963 season. From next season, Everton will play at Bramley-Moore Dock.
