Persistently nurture passion

On May 25, 14-year-old athlete To Tuan Anh (Dong Hoi ward) won a gold medal in his first participation in the 2025 Central Highlands Vovinam Championship in the 51kg weight class. His achievement was greatly contributed by coach Hoang Viet Hung, who has always been by his side, guiding and encouraging him in all aspects. This is also the premise for Hoang Viet Hung and athlete To Tuan Anh to continue training and preparing for the Youth Kickboxing Championship taking place in Gia Lai province in the near future.

Once a "versatile" athlete competing in many martial arts, Coach Hoang Viet Hung has now trained a generation of next-generation athletes with enough courage and qualities to compete and achieve high results in many sports such as: Vovinam, kickboxing, traditional martial arts...

Talking about his connection with martial arts, Mr. Hung said: "I came to martial arts quite late because when I was young, my family lived in the countryside so I didn't have the opportunity to approach martial arts. When I was in high school, I moved away from home to Hoan Lao commune to stay and study. Every time after school, I often stood there, staring blankly at people learning Vovinam, forgetting about meal times. I loved it so much, but my father was determined not to let me learn martial arts because he was afraid that I would get hot-tempered and beat up my friends. After many unsuccessful attempts to persuade my father, my aunt secretly let me learn Vovinam without my father's permission."

After graduating from high school, Hung went to Hue City to study at Hue University of Economics . Here, the young man began to have more favorable opportunities to continue practicing Vovinam and learn more about karate. He loved to compete, so Hung always sought out good athletes to learn from and asked to compete in friendly matches. However, the more he fought, the more he realized that he was very wrong in technique, sometimes he struggled and still got knocked out.

Despite many failures and injuries, Mr. Hung was very persistent and never gave up. At that time, according to the assessment of many martial artists and coaches, Hoang Viet Hung had many qualities of a martial arts talent, with passion and determination, but due to improper training, he could not awaken all the hidden potential within.

“Following the recommendation of my friends, I went to many martial arts schools in the Central region to study and compete more systematically. During my time in Hue City participating in amateur martial arts competitions, I was fortunate to be selected by Mr. Truong Quang Kim, Head of Kinh Van An Traditional Martial Arts, to join the Traditional Martial Arts Team of Thua Thien Hue Province (now Hue City),” said Mr. Hung.

Although he had never practiced traditional martial arts, with his quick wit and diligence, he quickly grasped the essence, confidently participated in the National Traditional Martial Arts Tournament in 2010 and won a silver medal. In 2012, Mr. Hung continued to participate in the National Student Karate Tournament and won another bronze medal. In addition, during his time as a student, he also initiated the establishment and was the president of the martial arts club of Hue University of Economics.

With a passion and a desire to help children in the countryside have the opportunity to access and practice sports to improve their health, in 2015, Mr. Hung returned to Bac Trach commune to work and opened a traditional martial arts class. The martial arts class was opened immediately, attracting more than 120 children to register to practice diligently and enthusiastically. In addition to teaching children self-defense skills and protecting the vulnerable, Mr. Hung also spreads the spirit of martial arts, teaches students to persistently pursue their passion, cultivate morality to become useful people for society.

To satisfy his passion for competition and accumulate experience from tournaments to serve the training of athletes well, Mr. Viet Hung has participated in many sports tournaments such as traditional martial arts, kickboxing, vovinam... leaving many impressions, notably winning 4 gold medals at the Traditional Martial Arts Tournament of Nghe An province from 2020-2022, winning 1 silver medal at the Vovinam Championship of the Central Highlands in 2025. The athletes he trained also competed and won many high achievements, typically 12 athletes competing in the Vovinam Championship of the Central Highlands in 2024 won 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, 10 bronze medals; 9 athletes competing in the Vovinam Championship of the Central Highlands in 2025 won 1 gold medal, 3 silver medals, 5 bronze medals.

" Giving wings" to young talents

“For me, the love of martial arts seems to be ingrained in my blood. That is also the reason why in 2016, I decided to leave my stable job in my hometown to go to Dong Hoi to continue opening martial arts classes and running a sports shop,” Mr. Hung shared.

One thing that impresses many people about him is his will to always aim for higher goals, using today's success as a lever for tomorrow. On the journey of developing his martial arts career, Viet Hung always strives to be "versatile" in many martial arts.

He attended many training courses, went on exchanges, gained more experience, coaching skills, training and competing in kickboxing. Although he has only been involved in this martial art for a short time, he has shown his mettle and confidence in participating in kickboxing competitions nationwide.

Mr. Hung confided: “Realizing that there are not many playgrounds in the province, few people pursue kickboxing long-term while there are many promising young talents in this sport, I cherish the dream of building a team to compete in professional kickboxing. To make this come true, in June 2022, I invested in opening the Fit24QB Center - Kickboxing & CrossFit. Up to now, the center has gradually built up its reputation and brand with 60 students practicing regularly.

In addition to providing adequate facilities and equipment to serve the training and competition of kickboxing, karate, vovinam..., I also regularly invite famous coaches and athletes such as Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat to exchange and provide training guidance; organize for athletes to compete and exchange with sports centers in the Central region; pay out of my own pocket for athletes to train and compete with high results in many kickboxing tournaments nationwide; organize training for many teams of the police force and border guards to compete with high results in national unarmed combat competitions...".

The results achieved in the early years of building the kickboxing movement and other martial arts are the motivation for Mr. Hoang Viet Hung to continue his journey ahead, constantly striving to develop himself, continuing to participate in competitions to satisfy his passion, and at the same time learning training and competition experience from leading coaches across the country. "In the coming time, I will focus on building new training methods with higher efficiency; at the same time, invest more in teaching and training at the center and actively search for young kickboxing talents to nurture and help them go far," Mr. Hung added.
