Big Ben chimes to announce the new year
Since New Year's Eve 1923, when engineer AG Dryland AG Dryland climbed onto the roof opposite the British Parliament to record the New Year's bell ringing event, live streaming of this event has become an annual tradition and continues to this day, according to AFP today, December 31.
The unmistakable chimes of Big Ben have long played a central role in the lives of the people of the foggy land.
Big Ben chimes twice a day, at 6pm and midnight, and on Sundays it chimes a total of three times.
The chiming is so important that it still rings occasionally during the clock's five-year repair and restoration work, which began in 2017.
Big Ben will also chime when Britain leaves the European Union in 2021 and during the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II in 2022.
After a week of testing, the British national pride clock finally returned to normal operation last November.
Completed in 1859, the structure was originally known as the Clock Tower and houses Big Ben and its five bells before being renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012.
