Despite many difficulties, pangasius exports in 2025 still aim to reach 2 billion USD

Within the framework of the Dong Thap Pangasius Festival 2024, on November 17, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Dong Thap province to organize a conference "Summarizing the pangasius industry in 2024 and discussing solutions to implement tasks in 2025".

According to the report of the Department of Fisheries given at the conference, the output of pangasius in 2024 is estimated at 1.67 million tons, equal to 99% compared to the same period in 2023. As of October 15, the export turnover of pangasius reached 1.56 billion USD, an increase of 8.9% over the same period in 2023. This growth rate is uneven due to fierce competition from other countries and fish products.

In 2025, Vietnam set a target of increasing value, striving to achieve an output of 1.65 million tons, aiming for an export turnover of about 2 billion USD, despite many fluctuations in production, economy and environment.

At the conference, many delegates commented that in 2025 and many years to come, the pangasius industry will continue to face many major challenges.

Specifically, in addition to the phenomenon of global climate change causing changes in floods on the Mekong River, negatively affecting the water source for aquaculture, including pangasius farming, the pangasius industry also faces fierce competition as some countries such as China, India, and Indonesia are promoting similar aquaculture and seafood processing.

In addition, the domestic pangasius industry is also affected by regulations on emission reduction in farming, processing and exporting, including requirements related to commitments at the COP 26 Summit; technical and trade barriers of importing countries...

In the above situation, to achieve the set goals, it requires great efforts from the entire industry and many functional agencies.

On the local side, provincial People's Committees need to strictly manage the use of drugs and chemicals of unknown origin to avoid technical barriers of importing countries.

Institutes and universities conduct research to improve the quality of breeding stock to improve the quality of output products. The Pangasius Association actively conducts research on consumer markets and eating habits to support export enterprises in orienting their products more realistically.

Processing and exporting enterprises themselves proactively improve products in the direction of quality and diversity, especially pre-processed products and value-added products... thereby helping to increase value and expand diverse market needs.

Aquaculture feed processing enterprises need to pay more attention to the production of mixed feed according to Halal standards, supporting the expansion of the business market. Breeding and commercial farming facilities, in addition to strictly complying with industry regulations, need to pay more attention to raising according to Halal certification because this market has a lot of potential.

In order for the tra fish industry to develop in the coming time, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien suggested that ministries, branches and localities need to develop tra fish breeds in an industrial direction, with large-scale production, ensuring biosafety.

There must be solutions to strictly control the management and use of antibiotics in aquaculture; strictly manage pangasius breeding facilities, ensuring the quality of breeding sources; pangasius production and processing must aim for green production, reducing emissions; and improve the effectiveness of scientific research in pangasius farming and production.

In addition, forming a closed banana chain in production - processing - consumption; enhancing the application of science and technology, taking advantage of by-products to increase product value; besides traditional markets, it is necessary to search for and develop new potential markets, including Muslim markets that meet Halal certification requirements.
