Excavators are transporting rocks and soil from the landslide scene and the classroom at Pac Ra school is cracked.
In the middle of a dilapidated wooden house of about 30 square meters in Pac Ra hamlet (Ly Bon commune, Bao Lam district, Cao Bang province), 40 kindergarten students are babbling to spell letters. This is their temporary school after the main school was damaged beyond repair by a landslide following storm No. 3.
At Pac Ra Kindergarten in late September, an excavator was continuously loading rocks and dirt onto large trucks. Inside the school, rocks and dirt were scattered, mirrors were broken. A whole wall collapsed, causing dirt to spill into the classrooms. To prevent the school from collapsing at any time, wooden beams were erected to support the building.
Pac Ra Kindergarten has 40 kindergarten students, most of whose families are poor and near-poor, Mong, Dao, Tay ethnic groups, and their lives still face many difficulties.
Standing in the middle of a messy classroom, Ms. Ma Thi Tu (principal of Ly Bon Kindergarten) said: "After the rains in July, soil from the hill next door slid down to Pac Ra school.
Determining the risk of unsafe teaching and learning, school leaders moved classes to a wooden house in the Pac Ra village cultural house, which had been abandoned for nearly two years. On September 9, heavy rains after storm No. 3 caused rocks and soil from the neighboring hill to collapse, causing serious damage to the school beyond repair.
About 100 meters from Pac Ra school, two temporary classrooms for children are lit.
“All the students’ eating, activities and studying take place in this cramped space. Although the house has been renovated, every time it rains heavily, the classroom leaks. The wooden pillars are also infested with termites, so sometimes when the children exercise vigorously, I am very worried,” added teacher Dam Thi Thuyen.
Ms. Ma Thi Tu, principal of Ly Bon Commune Kindergarten, is still shocked by the devastation caused by storm No. 3 at Pac Ra school.
In the temporary classroom, the wooden pillars are infested with termites.
The temporary school for Pac Ra kindergarten students used to be the Pac Ra village cultural house, made of wood and abandoned for 2 years.
The huge amount of rock and soil that fell down caused part of the classroom to completely collapse, seriously affecting the structure of the house.
After lunch, the students will sleep in the classroom.
Teachers try to keep the temporary school clean but there are still many difficulties.
