Facebook and Instagram launch ad-free subscription plans in the UK

On September 26, Meta Group announced that it will launch a paid subscription package so that Facebook and Instagram users in the UK can use the service without ads, expanding the model already applied in the European Union (EU).

In the coming weeks, UK users will be able to opt out of personalized ads by paying £2.99 a month (about $4) on the web, or £3.99 via the app on iOS and Android.

This is lower than in the EU, where ad-free subscriptions start at 5.99 euros ($7).

Meta said the decision was to comply with “new UK regulatory guidance”, and confirmed the new model would give users a choice over whether to share their data for advertising purposes.

Meta previously announced a similar subscription plan in the EU in late 2023 to meet tighter regulations on large tech corporations. However, the company has repeatedly run into disputes with regulators over data privacy issues.

The EU data watchdog has asked Meta to stop forcing users to pay for the right to protect their personal data, forcing the company to adjust its model.

While criticizing the “over-intervention” of European regulators, Meta praised the “constructive” approach of the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). According to the ICO, the new subscription package helps Meta comply with UK legal regulations./.
