Báo Dân tríBáo Dân trí04/12/2024

(Dan Tri) - Ford's position as the world's 6th largest automaker is being shaken, as the sales gap with the Chinese brand is now only about 50,000 vehicles.

BYD has risen to the position of the world's 6th largest automaker, with sales higher than Ford for the first time. And if it continues this trend, the company could reach sales of more than 4 million vehicles by the end of this year, officially surpassing Ford.

In the third quarter, BYD sold 1.13 million vehicles, up 38% year-on-year and the Chinese automaker’s best quarter yet. Meanwhile, Ford sold nearly 40,000 fewer vehicles than BYD, dropping from sixth to seventh place.

In the first 9 months of this year, Ford had sales of 3.3 million vehicles, while BYD reached 3.25 million vehicles, the gap is no longer large.

BYD isn’t the only Chinese company making traditional automakers nervous. Geely’s sales rose 14% in the third quarter to 820,000 vehicles, pushing it up to ninth place, above Nissan and below Honda.

China's third-largest automaker Chery also rose to 12th place, with sales up 27% to 550,000 vehicles.

According to Nikkei Asia, sales of many Japanese, European and American brands fell in the third quarter. For example, Toyota's sales fell 4% to 2.73 million vehicles, although it still held the world's No. 1 position. VW Group ranked second, with sales down 7% to 2.17 million vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Group remained in third place, but sales fell 3% to 1.77 million vehicles. Stellantis fared worse, with sales falling 20% to 1.14 million vehicles.
