Japanese Communications Minister Takeaki Matsumoto said G7 officials will hold their first AI meeting on May 30 and consider issues such as intellectual property protection, disinformation and how to regulate the technology.

The meeting comes as tech regulators around the world assess the impact of popular AI services like ChatGPT from Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

The EU is moving closer to enacting the world's first major law on AI, inspiring other countries to consider what rules should apply to AI tools.

Japan, as this year's G7 chair, "will lead the G7 discussion on the responsible use of innovative AI technology," Matsumoto said, adding that the forum hopes to make recommendations to heads of state by the end of the year.

At the G7 summit in Hiroshima last week, leaders also called for the development and adoption of international technical standards to keep AI “trustworthy” and “consistent with our shared democratic values.”

Speaking at a regular press conference, Mr. Matsumoto said the G7 AI working group will seek input from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
