'The pressure of being Tran Thanh's younger sister'

Talking to VTC News on the occasion of the New Year, Uyen An said she faced a lot of pressure because she is the younger sister of artist Tran Thanh.

- How did the role in the movie Mai come to Uyen An?

I went to the casting myself to get the role. When I heard Thanh share about the script Mai, I had special feelings for the character Binh Minh and wished Thanh would give me this role but he didn't say anything.

It was not until a while later that Thanh called me to tell me about the scene about Binh Minh and asked if I wanted to cast for this role. At that time, I saw the opportunity and immediately accepted. After completing the casting, Thanh saw that I could act but still did not want to give me the role. Thanh told me to wait a bit longer, until everyone's casting results were available, then he would announce it.

Next, I was called up a second time to cast directly for Mr. Thanh, the producer, and DOP (director of photography) to evaluate. I think Mr. Thanh talked to the crew to see if I could act. Finally, DOP Diep The Vinh convinced Mr. Thanh. The person who trusted me with the role was Mr. Diep The Vinh, not Mr. Thanh.

Uyen An faces a lot of pressure as Tran Thanh's younger sister.

- Why didn't Tran Thanh favor his younger sister with the main role in the movie Mai? Have you ever asked Tran Thanh this?

I think this role requires a change in appearance, meaning it needs depth and ups and downs. On the outside, I look gentle and "girly" so Mr. Tran Thanh did not trust me with the main role.

- Did Uyen An cut her hair short to play the role of Binh Minh?

Yes! I cut my long hair to have a short hairstyle that suits the character Binh Minh. Before filming, Mr. Thanh told me that this movie had to have a haircut because everything had to be real in the cinema, because in the movie "Mrs. Nu's House", my hair was "like a crow's nest". In "Mrs. Nu's House", I wore a wig.

After Mr. Thanh finished speaking, I agreed to get a haircut. I was very satisfied and happy because I really wanted to change to a new image. Transforming and changing my image is something that all actors want, not just me. After signing the film contract with Mr. Thanh, I immediately got a haircut.

- Why did Uyen An have to ask Tran Thanh to sign a contract before cutting her hair?

As you can see, Thanh has changed the script a lot since the beginning. Thanh always wants to do better, with better quality, so the script has changed more than 20 times, so who knows if I cut my hair and he still changes it. After signing the contract, everything is certain, then I go get a haircut.

- Does Uyen An feel pressured being Tran Thanh's younger sister?

There was pressure but not so much now. However, I never joked around, on the contrary, I always tried my best and did not rely on Thanh.

The pressure is for me to prove my ability to be recognized by the name Uyen An. Now when people mention me, they call me by the name of Tran Thanh's younger sister, few people call me by the correct name Uyen An. But this is true, in reality, no one can deny that I am the younger sister of Tran Thanh, a very talented artist.

I am not capable enough to step out of the name of Tran Thanh's sister. Hopefully, when my career develops better, I will be able to do that.

- Does Uyen An have any sympathy for Mai and Binh Minh's mother and daughter in the movie?

I really like the character Mai. In the movie, I play Binh Minh, Mai’s daughter. However, Binh Minh always wants to live like a real man. This character has to face many prejudices.

From the first day I read the script, I had a special feeling, like sympathy and then the feeling of wanting to protect the character Mai, similar to the way Binh Minh wanted to protect his mother.

In real life, my gait is similar to Binh Minh's, but I'm not as graceful and "girly" as I appear in the media. I find everything comes naturally to me, so playing this role is easy.

- What material did Uyen An use to play the role of Binh Minh?

Binh Minh is only about 20 years old but is already mature and sensible. Perhaps, because at home, everyone taught me to live in harmony and not think only of myself, so when I played the role of Binh Minh, I acted quite well.

Besides, another thing that makes me try to act well in movies is because people always look at me as Tran Thanh's younger sister. No matter what I do, I try to do it well so as not to affect my brother.

- Does Uyen An feel pressured being famous?

Honestly, I'm not under much pressure.

- It is known that Uyen An has only been active in the arts for 4 years but has already released 2 movies and 1 movie about to be released. So does Uyen An feel that compared to her peers, she has made faster and more favorable progress?

Perhaps being Tran Thanh's younger sister is easier than many other people's opportunities. But it took me a long time to format the name Uyen An because people still call me Tran Thanh's younger sister.

- After "Mrs. Nu's House", Uyen An has had more shows and is financially independent?

I am only financially independent to live, but to make a product, it costs as much as a small apartment, no less. I am not as rich as Tran Thanh to go all in like that.

- Does Uyen An have any personal wishes for the new year?

I have wanted to have my own products for a long time but my finances have not allowed it. I hope that in the near future I will have enough finance to carry out the projects that I have been cherishing.
