The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment has just announced a report on the production, market, import and export of agricultural, forestry and fishery products in July and the first 7 months of 2025.

Accordingly, rice is one of the five products with the highest export turnover of the agricultural sector in the past 7 months.

Preliminary statistics show that in July, our country exported 750,000 tons of rice, worth 366.1 million USD, bringing the total export turnover of this item to 5.5 million tons and 2.81 billion USD in the first 7 months of 2025.

Compared to the same period last year, although rice exports increased by 3.1% in volume, they decreased sharply by 15.9% in value. The reason is that the average export price in the past 7 months only reached 514 USD/ton, down 18.4% compared to the same period in 2024.

Regarding export markets, the Philippines remains the largest traditional customer, accounting for 42.6% of our country's rice export turnover in the first half of this year. Ghana and Ivory Coast are the next two largest markets with market shares of 11.1% and 10.6%, respectively.

Compared to the same period last year, the value of rice exports to the Philippines market decreased by 13.5%. In contrast, exports to the Ghana market increased sharply by 53.5%, and to the Ivory Coast market by 96.6%.

Among the 15 largest export markets, rice export value increased the most in the Bangladesh market, with an increase of 188.2 times, and decreased the most in the Malaysian market, with a decrease of 58.5%.

Notably, in contrast to the sharp decline in exports, rice imports skyrocketed to 1 billion USD. Compared to the figure of 761 million USD in the same period last year, rice imports in the same period this year increased by 31.4%.

This is also the second time in history that rice imports have reached 1 billion USD.

The decrease in exports and increase in imports occurred in the context of rice prices in the market plummeting to very low levels.

According to data from the Vietnam Food Association, on July 29, the export price of 5% broken rice from Vietnam was at 382 USD/ton, while that of Thailand, India and Pakistan were 375 USD/ton, 377 USD/ton and 376 USD/ton, respectively.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, although exports decreased while imports increased sharply, rice is still one of the six items with the highest trade surplus in the agricultural sector in the past seven months.
