Rescue dog locked in container for more than a week

The dog, later named Connie, was trapped in a container destined for overseas shipping and had been inside for at least eight days before being discovered on January 31.

The US Coast Guard Inspection Team randomly selected thousands of containers at the port in Houston for inspection. They heard barking and scraping sounds from the containers, which were stacked nearly 8m high.

The inspection team had to use a crane to lower the container. When the door was opened, a dog ran out. "He was exhausted, hungry and thirsty but very happy to see the people who rescued him," according to a Facebook post by the coast guard.

Photos posted on Facebook showed Connie wagging her tail, sniffing around and drinking water after her escape. Coast Guard officials said Connie had been trapped for at least eight days without water or food and was emaciated and dirty when she was rescued.

Authorities have not yet determined where the container came from, but it was full of old cars, most likely on their way to be sold overseas for spare parts. It is likely that Connie was in a car at a scrapyard when she accidentally got into the container and became trapped. If she is not rescued, Connie could have been in the container for another week before the cargo ship arrives, and would have gone hungry for two weeks.

According to media reports, Connie was taken to the Pasadena Animal Shelter for care, before being taken to Forever Changed Animal Rescue (FCAR). They plan to find her "the wonderful home she deserves." FCAR's Facebook post has been flooded with comments from people wanting to adopt Connie.
