Previously, at around 7:30 p.m. on September 16, An Hai Ward Police received a report from Ms. VTBL that her son NVMT (born in 2007) was suspected of being threatened and defrauded by bad guys for 200 million VND. The subjects asked the family to transfer 200 million VND to pay off NVMT's football betting debt.
According to the report, at 4:30 p.m., NVMT left home to go to school, but at 6:25 p.m., Ms. L. received a text message from her son saying that she was being asked to pay a debt, forcing the family to transfer money to her personal account. When the family encouraged her to return, NVMT refused, saying that she would only dare to return home after paying off the debt.
Determining that the case had signs of online kidnapping and extortion, An Hai Ward Police quickly coordinated with the Criminal Police Department, the Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of Da Nang City Police and Hoi An Tay Ward Police to investigate.
At 11 p.m. the same day, the police discovered NVMT alone in a house in Hoi An Tay ward in a state of panic.
During the struggle, NVMT confessed that a stranger called him via social media, impersonating a police officer, threatening him about his involvement in a “money laundering case” and asking him to leave his home and rent a room to “work”. After that, the suspect forced him to call and text his family to request a transfer of 200 million VND to be “guaranteed out”.
The police promptly stopped and safely rescued NVMT, and continued to coordinate with functional units to investigate related subjects.
